From staff reports

LEWISTOWN -- Motorists in Mifflin County could encounter lane restrictions and flaggers on several major routes this week as Pennsylvania Department of Transportation crews perform bridge, shoulder and drainage maintenance, with additional work scheduled throughout neighboring Juniata County.

In Mifflin County, bridge maintenance and cleaning is scheduled Monday through Thursday on Route 322 between the Milroy and Reedsville-Belleville exits. PennDOT will use single-lane closures while crews are working.

On Friday, crews are scheduled to perform bridge maintenance on Route 22 at a bridge spanning the Lewistown Bypass in Granville Township. Single-lane closures also will be in place there.

Shoulder maintenance is scheduled Monday on Route 3009, Furnace Road, between Ferguson Valley Road in Oliver Township and North Queen Street in McVeytown.

From Tuesday through Friday, crews will move to Route 103 between McVey's Road in Wayne Township and John Street in Bratton Township.

Flaggers will provide traffic control during daylight hours at both locations and may use pilot vehicles to guide motorists through the work zones.

Additional work is planned Monday through Thursday along Route 322 between Stone Creek Road and the Milroy exit in Armagh Township. Crews will perform side dozing, which involves removing excess material from beneath guide rails to improve drainage. Single-lane closures will be in effect.

In Juniata County, pipe replacement and cleaning is scheduled Monday through Friday along Route 35 between McKinley Road in Tuscarora Township and Route 3008, Groninger Valley Road, in Beale Township.

Flaggers will provide traffic control during daylight hours and may use a pilot vehicle.

Crews also are scheduled to perform side dozing along several stretches of Route 333 throughout the week.

Work is planned from Route 35 in Mifflin Borough north for approximately 7.5 miles to the Juniata-Mifflin county line; between Route 35 in Milford Township and Route 75 in Port Royal; and between Route 75 in Turbett Township and River Road in Delaware Township.

Flaggers and possible pilot vehicles will control traffic at each location during daylight hours.

PennDOT said side dozing and other drainage maintenance help prevent water from collecting along roadways, where it can weaken pavement, contribute to potholes and create icing problems during winter.

The Juniata County schedule also lists bridge maintenance on Route 2010, Black Dog Road, at a bridge over a tributary of Cocolamus Creek about two miles southeast of Cocolamus in Delaware Township. However, the release lists that work for Aug. 10-14 -- the previous week -- rather than the week of Aug. 17. The listed detour uses Ehrenzeller Road, Leister Valley Road and Evendale Hill Road.

PennDOT said all maintenance schedules are subject to change because of weather, emergencies or other unforeseen circumstances.

Drivers encountering a pilot vehicle displaying a "Pilot Car Follow Me" sign and revolving yellow light should remain behind the vehicle until it leaves the roadway and should not attempt to pass.

Road concerns can be reported to PennDOT at 1-800-FIX-ROAD.
