CLEARFIELD -- High school students across north-central Pennsylvania are being invited to turn PennDOT snowplow blades into works of art while helping spread a winter driving safety message.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is accepting participants for its annual Paint the Plow program, which challenges students to create an original mural on a snowplow blade using a designated statewide safety theme.
This year’s theme is “Snow Means Slow,” reminding motorists to use caution around snowplows and adjust their driving during winter weather.
PennDOT advises motorists to remain at least six car lengths behind an operating plow, avoid driving in a plow driver’s blind spots and never attempt to pass or drive between plows operating side by side.
The Paint the Plow program began in Pennsylvania in 2015 and has since expanded to most counties across the state. Last year, high school students from five counties in PennDOT’s District 2 participated.
Students from public and private high schools are eligible to participate. School officials must complete and return an application to regional PennDOT coordinator Steve Harmic at sharmic@pa.gov or by mail to 70 PennDOT Drive, Clearfield, PA 16830, Attn: Steve Harmic.
Dates for delivery and pickup of the snowplow blades vary by county.
