Lewistown man jailed on assault charges

Police allege man fired handgun into occupied home during family dispute

LEWISTOWN -- A Lewistown man is facing multiple felony charges after police allege he fired a handgun into an occupied residence during a domestic dispute early Sunday morning.

Paul Anthony Goldenbaum, 46, was charged with five counts of aggravated assault, five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, three counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied structure, aggravated cruelty to animals, three counts of simple assault and five counts of recklessly endangering another person. He is being held in the Mifflin County Correctional Facility after failing to post $250,000 monetary bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 19 before Magisterial District Judge Kent A. Smith.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Lewistown police responded to 129 N. Grand St. at about 2:10 a.m. Sunday after receiving reports that shots had been fired during a domestic dispute. Officers were advised that Goldenbaum had been involved in a confrontation with family members and had fired a handgun.

Police said Goldenbaum became involved in an argument with family members inside the residence before allegedly displaying a handgun. A male victim intervened, and the two became involved in a physical altercation before the victims fled to a neighboring residence. The group included two adults, two children and another adult male.

According to police, the victims were attempting to enter the neighboring home when Goldenbaum allegedly fired three rounds from the porch of his residence into the occupied structure.

Investigators said they recovered a spent shell casing, a live round and blood from the porch of the residence. Three bullet holes were found in the exterior wall of the neighboring home, and an interior stairway wall also had three bullet holes. Police said a cat was found dead after being struck by a bullet. One victim suffered swelling and redness around one eye and a laceration to an eyelid during the incident.

Police executed a search warrant at the residence and recovered a black 9 mm handgun with a loaded magazine. According to the affidavit, investigators also reviewed video from the home's digital video recorder, which they said captured portions of the incident, including Goldenbaum allegedly firing the handgun toward the neighboring residence before re-entering the home.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 19 before Magisterial District Judge Kent A. Smith.
