GRANVILLE -- Granville Township supervisors will hold a special meeting today to propose changes to the township's recently adopted zoning regulations governing data centers.
The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Granville Fire Company Event Center, 105 Malta Drive. According to the township's public notice, the purpose of the meeting is to propose an amendment to the zoning ordinance regarding data centers. No other business will be discussed.
The meeting is the latest development in a months-long process surrounding data center development in the township that has drawn significant public attention and prompted officials to develop specific regulations for the facilities.
In recent months, supervisors adopted a data center ordinance following several public meetings and extensive comments from residents concerned about potential water and electricity demands, noise, traffic, environmental impacts and the effect a large-scale development could have on township infrastructure.
The current ordinance allows data centers as a conditional use in the township's Industrial District and establishes requirements addressing issues including setbacks, buffering and landscaping, lighting, backup generators, emergency response, electronic waste and eventual decommissioning of a facility.
A potential data center development plan was submitted to the township in July, but was subsequently rejected as incomplete. Township officials said the traffic-impact study accompanying the submission lacked required certification, and the filing fee was returned. The rejection was procedural and did not constitute a decision on the merits of the proposed project.
