LEWISTOWN -- Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital has earned two American Heart Association and American Stroke Association recognitions for its stroke care, joining several other Geisinger hospitals honored for heart and stroke treatment.

The Lewistown hospital received the Get With The Guidelines-Rural Stroke Gold award as well as the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus award with Target: Stroke Honor Roll and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll recognition.

The Get With The Guidelines achievement awards recognize hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to following evidence-based guidelines for treating heart disease and stroke. According to Geisinger, adherence to those guidelines can improve patient outcomes, support recovery and reduce hospital readmissions.

The program brings together expertise from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to help hospitals align patient care with current, science-based treatment recommendations.

"We are committed to delivering high-quality care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines and continually improving processes to ensure patients receive timely, appropriate care for heart attacks and strokes," said Dr. Alfred Casale, chief medical officer of surgical services at Geisinger.

"The Get With The Guidelines programs help our teams put proven science into practice every day, leading to better outcomes and helping our patients live longer, healthier lives," Casale added.

Other Geisinger facilities receiving recognition included Geisinger Community Medical Center, which received the Get With The Guidelines-CAD STEMI Receiving Gold Plus Award with Target: Type 2 Diabetes; and Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital, which received Rural Stroke Gold recognition.

Geisinger Medical Center received Commitment to Quality recognition, the CAD STEMI Receiving Gold Plus Award with Target: Type 2 Diabetes and Target: Aortic Stenosis Honor Roll recognition.

Geisinger Medical Center Muncy received Rural Stroke Gold and Stroke Gold Plus with Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll recognition.

Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center received Stroke Gold Plus with Target: Stroke Honor Roll and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll recognition, along with the CAD STEMI Receiving Gold Plus Award with Target: Type 2 Diabetes.

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease and stroke are the leading and fifth-leading causes of death in the United States, respectively. Research has shown that patients can experience better outcomes when health care teams consistently follow evidence-based treatment guidelines.
