MIFFLINTOWN -- Readers, collectors, movie enthusiasts, music lovers and puzzle fans alike will have one final chance this summer to uncover great bargains while supporting a beloved community institution. The Friends of the Juniata County Library will host its final summer book sale of the season on Thursday, Aug. 13, with doors open from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.
The all-day event is expected to draw visitors from throughout Juniata County and neighboring communities who are looking for affordable books, entertainment and family activities. Known for offering thousands of items at unbeatable prices, the Friends’ book sales have become a favorite tradition for area residents and an important fundraiser that helps support library programs and services throughout the year.
One of the highlights of the sale is the opportunity to purchase a bag for only $7 and fill it with as many books, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks and magazines as possible. The popular bag sale allows shoppers to stretch their dollars while exploring a wide variety of reading and entertainment options. Whether visitors are searching for bestselling novels, classic literature, children’s books, history titles, biographies, cookbooks, crafts or educational resources, there is something available for every age and interest.
Library supporters say the event offers more than just bargain shopping. It also helps give donated materials a second life by placing them into the hands of new readers and families. “Many regular customers attend every sale, eager to discover hidden treasures, out-of-print editions, collectible volumes, and unique items that often appear on the shelves,” Linda said.
Children and families are especially encouraged to attend.
“With school resuming later in the month, the sale provides an affordable opportunity for parents to build home libraries and encourage reading habits as students prepare for the new academic year,” Linda added. “Teachers, homeschool families, and community organizations also frequently take advantage of the large selection of educational resources.”
In addition to books, the sale room is packed with entertainment options. Shoppers can browse DVDs featuring favorite films and television series, audiobooks perfect for road trips and long commutes, music CDs spanning numerous genres, and magazines covering everything from hobbies and gardening to travel and current events. The diverse selection means visitors are likely to find something new and interesting during every visit.
Puzzle enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy at the event. The Friends of the Juniata County Library have stocked the sale room with a wide assortment of jigsaw puzzles, ranging from beginner-level designs to more challenging options for experienced puzzlers. Community members Barb Gilson and Patti Hines recently showcased the extensive inventory, holding armloads of puzzles available for purchase.
New jigsaw puzzles will be available for just $3 each, while gently used puzzles can be purchased for only $1 each, making them one of the best bargains at the sale. Organizers report that puzzles have grown increasingly popular in recent years as families seek inexpensive and engaging activities they can enjoy together at home.
The Friends of the Juniata County Library organization plays a vital role in supporting the library’s mission of promoting literacy, lifelong learning, and community engagement. Through fundraising efforts such as book sales, memberships, and special events, the group helps provide funding for programs that might not otherwise be possible through the library’s regular operating budget.
Proceeds from the Aug. 13 sale will help support a variety of library initiatives, including children’s programming, summer reading activities, special events, educational workshops, technology resources, and other services that benefit library patrons across Juniata County. Every purchase made during the sale directly contributes to these efforts and helps ensure that the library can continue serving as an important educational and cultural resource for the community.
Library officials note that fundraisers such as the book sale not only raise money but also strengthen community connections. The sale provides an opportunity for residents to gather, browse, share recommendations, and celebrate a common love of reading and learning. Many community members look forward to the events each year, often leaving with bags full of books and stories to enjoy long after the sale has ended.
Because inventory changes throughout the day and many popular items sell quickly, organizers recommend arriving early for the widest selection. However, new discoveries can often be found throughout the day as shoppers continue to browse the extensive collection of donated materials.
As the final summer sale of the season, the August 13 event is expected to offer one last opportunity for bargain hunters to stock up before fall arrives. “Whether searching for beach reads, educational materials, family movies, audiobooks, puzzles, or simply an enjoyable way to support the local library, visitors are encouraged to stop by and explore everything the sale has to offer,” Linda said.
The Friends of the Juniata County Library welcome residents of all ages to attend and help make the fundraiser a success. Every book purchased, puzzle selected, or bag filled contributes to the continued growth and success of library programs that serve the entire community.
