BALD EAGLE -- One person was killed Tuesday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash along Interstate 80 in Centre County that resulted in several vehicles catching fire, according to Pennsylvania State Police at Rockview.
Police said the crash occurred at about 3:32 p.m. on I-80 east near mile marker 163, before the merge point for a long-term construction zone near mile marker 164.8. Traffic was slowed because of a backup approaching the construction zone.
According to police, the first vehicle struck a second vehicle and then a third, causing the third vehicle to catch fire. The third vehicle then struck another vehicle.
Police said the first vehicle continued east and struck two more vehicles, both of which caught fire, before striking a seventh vehicle. The first vehicle then exploded and became fully engulfed in flames.
The seventh vehicle traveled about 100 yards before coming to rest. The driver of the first vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police did not identify the driver or provide information about any other injuries in the release.
