Coroner identifies man in Charles Street standoff

Death of 52-year-old Lewistown man ruled suicide

LEWISTOWN -- The Mifflin County Coroner's Office has identified the man who died during a barricade standoff Saturday on Charles Street in Lewistown.

Mifflin County Coroner Andrea L. Alcalde identified the man as Shawn Dearment, 52, of Lewistown.

Dearment died from a gunshot wound, and his manner of death was ruled suicide, according to a release issued Wednesday by the coroner's office.

The incident occurred Saturday, Aug. 15, and prompted a significant response from law enforcement and other emergency personnel. The surrounding area was closed for several hours while authorities responded to the standoff.

Little information was publicly available about the incident at that time.

The coroner's office thanked law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency personnel, dispatchers and others who assisted during the incident.
