Community encouraged to join Goose Day celebration
Organizers seek events, activities for annual tradition

LEWISTOWN -- The Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau is encouraging businesses, organizations and residents to take part in this year’s Goose Day celebration by hosting events or offering goose-themed activities as the community prepares for the annual tradition.
The celebration will take place Sept. 25-29 and will feature the debut of the Red, White & Goose Parade on Sept. 29 in downtown Lewistown, tying Goose Day to the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.
“While Lewistown did not have a parade to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we saw an opportunity to bring those two celebrations together in a uniquely Mifflin County way,” Mifflin County Commissioner and Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau Board President Kevin Kodish said. “The ‘Red, White & Goose Day Parade’ gives us a chance to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary while also honoring a tradition that has been part of Mifflin County for generations.”
The visitors bureau is asking businesses, churches, neighborhoods, civic groups and individuals throughout Mifflin and Juniata counties to participate by hosting events, offering goose-themed specials, distributing Goose Day information or decorating for the holiday.
Anyone planning a Goose Day activity is asked to notify the visitors bureau by Aug. 21 to be included in the official Goose Day schedule, which will be released Sept. 1 at GooseDay.Fun.
“Goose Day is what happens when an entire community decides to have fun together,” said Jenny Landis, executive director of the Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau. “Whether you host an event, offer a goose-inspired special or simply decorate and celebrate, every effort helps keep this tradition alive and growing.”
Last year’s Goose Day celebration drew thousands of visitors to events including Lucky Friday and the Drone Light Show. Organizers hope expanded community participation and the addition of the new parade will make this year’s celebration the largest yet.
