NEWPORT -- August arrives quietly at Little Buffalo State Park in Newport, the kind of quiet that settles over Holman Lake before the first boats push off. The mornings carry a thin veil of mist, the trails breathe that warm, earthy scent of midsummer, and the woods feel full of small motion -- dragonflies skimming the shoreline, chipmunks darting through the underbrush, families drifting in with coolers and daypacks.

It's the month when the park feels most alive, not in a hurried way, but in that easy rhythm of people and nature sharing the same space.

By the time August gets going, Little Buffalo has built a calendar that matches the season's mood. Shoaff's Mill turns again on weekend mornings, kayaks slip out under rising moons, and kids gather at the campground amphitheater for crafts and stories.

Wildflower walks, stream studies, art sessions and fishing programs fill out a schedule designed to make the most of summer's last stretch, when daylight lingers and the lake still feels warm enough for one more paddle.

History in motion at Shoaff's Mill

Shoaff's Mill, the park's landmark 19th-century grist mill, opens its doors for free tours on select weekend dates throughout the month. Visitors can watch the 32-foot water wheel turn the machinery inside and hear how the mill once served the region. Tours run 10 a.m. to noon on Aug. 15, 16, 22, 23, 29 and 30.

Nature walks, hikes and hands-on learning

Park staff will lead several guided outings, including one for wildflower fans, who can also join a short walk on Aug. 23 at 1 p.m. from the Park Office to see native blooms along the exercise trail.

Families can dig into stream science during a Stream Study on Aug 16 at 10 a.m. near Pavilion 3.

Kayaking season hits its stride

Little Buffalo's boating programs ramp up in August with several chances to get on the water. Kayaking 101 on Aug 16 at 1 p.m. Meet at the Main Boat Launch.

The park's popular Moonlight Paddle series returns Aug. 27 with launch times at 8:15 a.m. and 5 p.m. These nighttime paddles require participants to bring their own kayak, a white light and some prior experience. Paddleboards and canoes are welcome, but pets and minors are not. An End of Summer Paddle rounds out the season on Aug 29 at 1 p.m.

Creative and kid-friendly programs

Campground visitors can stop by the amphitheater for Nature Crafts on Aug. 22 at 8 a.m. Summer Story Hour returns Aug. 21, from 10 to 11 a.m. with a relaxed morning of reading outdoors.

Art in the Park will be held Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. at the Park Office, offering a chance to create something inspired by the scenery.

The park's beekeeping program, Beehive Inspection and Honey Extraction, returns Aug. 26 at 3 p.m. at the Park Office.

Summer music at Moore Pavilion

The Perry County Council of the Arts continues its PerryLive! Summer Concert Series with a free performance today, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Moore Pavilion. Concertgoers can bring chairs and enjoy an easy evening by the water.

Tips for making the most of August

Many programs are free, though some require registration through the DCNR calendar. Visitors should bring appropriate gear for hiking, paddling or fishing. For evening events, a flashlight or headlamp makes the walk back to the car easier.

Little Buffalo's August schedule offers something for every age and interest, giving families and outdoor enthusiasts plenty of ways to enjoy the final stretch of summer.
