ALTOONA -- The James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center has received additional federal funding to continue infrastructure improvements as part of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Non-Recurring Maintenance program.
The funding was awarded during the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 after the Altoona-based medical center received an earlier round of funding this year. Nationwide, the VA is investing a record $4.8 billion through the program to modernize, repair and improve health care facilities.
At the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center, the funding includes $224,294 to support Electronic Health Record Modernization activities and $6.5 million for electrical system improvements designed to improve the facility’s long-term reliability and efficiency.
“This funding allows the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center to continue modernizing and improving, so our facility remains safe, efficient, and equipped to provide high-quality care for our Veterans in Central Pennsylvania,” Interim Medical Center Director David DiGiacomo said.
According to the VA, $2.2 billion of the fiscal year 2026 funding has been obligated through the third quarter, including $915 million for infrastructure repairs and upgrades, $229 million for facility modernization to support electronic health record updates and $11 million for major building improvements, including elevators, electrical systems and boiler plants.
