Supervisors discuss mini golf course improvements

LEWISTOWN -- The Derry Township Board of Supervisors heard positive updates on the Kish Park mini golf course and discussed course improvements at their Monday meeting.
Park Manager Josh Garver said the course is busy every day and he has heard from people that they visited the course on multiple occasions. "And we aren't even done yet," said Garver of the continuous course improvement work.
Chairman Ronald Napikoski Jr. noted that the township received a positive profit report from the mini golf course.
Napikoski suggested that the township use some of the profits to look into ways to improve the course. He explained that the summer heat exposes the golf course to the sun with little to no shade and suggested that sails could be used to provide relief from the heat on parts on the course.
Garver shared concerns that wind could pose an issue with sails.
The board discussed the potential use of sails and other fixtures that provide shade.
Garver shared that he was open to suggestions and explained that, according to contractors, planting trees would do more harm than good to the course.
Zoning Officer Chris Dobson stated that sails are inexpensive, but they are a hassle to put up. Dobson added that it is difficult to position sails so the wind catches them.
"They're not the type of thing you can put up and take down each day," Dobson said.
Vice Chairman Donald Warntz suggested that the board look into companies and pricing for options to provide relief from the heat.
Garver shared that upcoming improvements to the course include installing several benches, adding shrubbery, and adding the remaining fixtures for each hole on the course.
Currently, the 18-hole course features a fire truck kids can play on at hole two, a bear obstacle at hole 8, a camping scene kids can take a picture with at one of the holes, a Ferris wheel at another, and more to come.
Supervisors also approved a new half-off rate for ADA wheelchair players who can only access nine of the 18 holes as well as a deal for those looking to play the course more than once.
If you play a round of golf for $8, you can add another round for an additional $4, but both rounds must be played during the same visit. Children can play for $5 for the first round and $2.50 for the second.
Later during the meeting, Garver asked the board for suggestions for a location for the Liberty Tree that Derry Township received to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary at the Allensville Fireman's Festival on Friday.
Garver noted that the tree requires room to grow and suggested planting the tree in the field next to the Derry Township Municipal Building where people can come view the tree up close and view the tree from the highway.
Supervisors unanimously approved to plant the tree next to the municipal building.
The board then moved forward with old business agenda items which included approving Jay Fulkroad and Sons, Inc. as the contractor to complete the Nolan Drive bridge project in the amount of $526,610.57.
Supervisors also submitted a final request for reimbursement for Automated Red Light Enforcement Transportation Enhancements Grant in the amount of $19,282.11.
Officials approved to cancel a contract with Signal Service for an upcoming two-year period because it is already covered by Kuharchik Construction.
