Supervisors approve certification for CDBG application
Action supports Yeagertown road reconstruction project
LEWISTOWN — The Derry Township Board of Supervisors approved a certification to apply for 2026 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to move forward with the second phase of the Yeagertown area road reconstruction project at their Monday meeting.
The first phase of the project was funded with CDBG allocations from federal fiscal years 2022, 2023, and 2024. The project scope included reconstructing Derry Township roads, including First, Second, Third, and Fourth Street.
Grannas Brothers construction company began the first phase of the road reconstruction project on April 17 and completed the roadwork on April 24.
The second phase of the project involves reconstructing Greenwood and Mann Avenue using CDBG allocations from federal fiscal years 2024, 2025, and 2026.
“After today’s project certification at the township level, the next step will be for the county commissioners to approve all components of the overall FFY 2026 CDBG application,” said CDBG administrator Carol Kearney-High.
The Mifflin County Commissioners’ meeting regarding 2026 CDBG funding will take place during a second public hearing at the commissioners’ regular meeting at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3.
According to Kearney-High, the construction timeline primarily depends on the CDBG grant award process. The 2026 application will be submitted in October, but the grant money will not be available until the spring or summer of 2027.
There will be a competitive bidding process for the construction contract, and the roadwork timeline will depend on the contractor’s schedule and the weather.
In other news, supervisors approved two park use applications for Kish Park, including one to host the Adalyn Rose Foundation Empty Stroller Run/Walk 5k on Oct. 10 and another for the United Way Day of Caring on Sept. 16.
Supervisors also approved a Juniata River Valley Chamber of Commerce after-hours event at the Kish Park mini golf course on Tuesday, July 28.
