Burglary suspect found sitting on resident's couch
LEWISTOWN -- Lewistown Police Department officers were dispatched to the first block of South Pine Street in Lewistown for an alleged burglary at 1:04 p.m. on July 9, according to a release issued on Thursday. A resident reported that Brent E. Carolus, 53, of Lewistown, entered their home by removing an air conditioner from a window. Carolus was found sitting on a couch when the resident returned. Officers located him walking away and observed the air conditioner on the ground with damage. Carolus was arrested, and officers found a meth pipe and digital scale. He was charged with felony criminal trespass and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Meat seller arrested after disorderly outburst
LEWISTOWN -- William K. Ohmit, 36, of Lewistown, was found selling meat door-to-door without a transient retail permit at 5:53 p.m. on July 9, according to a release issued by the Lewistown Police Department on Thursday. Ohmit was blocking traffic and began cursing at officers, refusing to identify himself and a brief scuffle occurred when officers attempted to take him into custody. He was lodged in the Mifflin County Correctional Facility in Lewistown on misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges.
Naked bicyclist charged with indecent exposure
LEWISTOWN -- Charles A. Cooksey Jr., 37, of Lewistown, was charged with indecent exposure after Lewistown Police Department officers found him riding a bicycle naked on the 100 block of West Third Street in Lewistown, according to a release issued on Thursday. Cooksey rode up to officers and stopped, and he was taken into custody and initially refused to identify himself. He was later identified, and claimed an officer gave him permission to ride unclothed. Police said he appeared to be in an altered state and was transported to the hospital.
Man fires gun inside vehicle under US 322 underpass
LEWISTOWN -- According to a release issued by the Lewistown Police Department on Thursday, officers responded at 8:54 a.m. July 11 to South Walnut Street in Lewistown at the Route 322 underpass for a report of a vehicle parked on the sidewalk and a firearm discharged. Police found an unidentified 22-year-old man from Dover on a dirt embankment. Officers determined he fired a 9-millimeter handgun inside his vehicle toward the embankment. The bullet remained lodged in the vehicle door. He was transported to the hospital for a 302 mental health commitment after making comments about harming himself. He was cited for disorderly conduct and discharging a firearm in the borough.
Electric scooter crash leaves rider injured
LEWISTOWN -- Lewistown Police Department officers responded at to the 300 block of South Main Street in Lewistown at 1:47 p.m. on July 11 for an unresponsive male lying in the roadway, according to a release issued on Thursday. A witness said the man was riding an electric scooter when the front lifted off the road due to sudden acceleration. EMS transported him for treatment. Police reminded the public that powered scooters are illegal on public property.
Driver flees traffic stop after multiple violations
LEWISTOWN -- According to a release issued by the Lewistown Police Department on Thursday, officers were on patrol at 3:39 a.m. on July 12 and saw a vehicle make a wide turn on Logan Street in Lewistown, cross into the oncoming lane, pass a stop line and fail to stop at three additional stop signs. Officers initiated a stop on North Grand Street, but the driver continued to the rear of a residence on Bratton Avenue and attempted to back up despite emergency lights behind him. Officers attempted to make contact with the driver who began backing up trying to turn the vehicle around despite bright emergency lights flashing behind the driver. Police said the driver, identified only as a 47-year-old white male from Lewistown, appeared to be intoxicated and admitted to consuming beer. The driver showed several signs of impairment when conducting field sobriety tests and provided a preliminary breath test that was positive for the presence of alcohol. He was taken into custody for DUI and transported to the hospital where a sample of blood was obtained. Charges are pending toxicology results.
Bicyclist sought after hit-and-run crash
LEWISTOWN -- According to the release, officers investigated a hit-and-run at 8:52 a.m. July 12 on South Spruce Street at Church Lane. A bicyclist struck the passenger side of an SUV, smashing the window, denting the door and breaking the mirror. The bicyclist, described as a white male wearing blue jeans, a beard and a dark baseball hat, refused to identify himself and left the scene. Officers obtained video from a nearby church and are working to identify him.
Retail theft suspect found with methamphetamine, marijuana
LEWISTOWN -- A 30-year-old area man is being charged with retail theft, possession of controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia after Lewistown Police Department officers responded at 1:43 p.m. on July 12 to Lewistown Liquidators for a retail theft complaint, according to a release issued on Thursday.
Police said Levi T. Ryder concealed merchandise in his pocket and hid other items inside a box. Ryder was arrested for retail theft, a second offense. A search revealed methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Intoxicated man found in alley says he drank 'Not enough'
LEWISTOWN -- Lewistown Police Department officers responded to the rear of 10 E. Third St. for a man lying in the alley at 8:49 p.m. July 12, according to a release issued on Thursday. Police found Daniel Hafer, 45, of Harrisburg, covered in dirt and highly intoxicated. When asked how much he drank, Hafer replied, "Not enough." He was arrested for public drunkenness. A search revealed two baggies of marijuana. Hafer was released to a friend, and charges were filed.
Mother charged after autistic child found unsupervised in grocery store
LEWISTOWN -- Lewistown Police Department officers responded at 10:03 p.m. July 12 to the Giant Food Store, located at 200 S. Dorcas St., Lewistown, for a report of a 10-year-old child running through the store unsupervised and attempting to open Drain-O, according to a report released on Thursday. Police located the non-verbal autistic juvenile, whom officers had encountered five times in the past week after escaping their residence. The child's mother, Shanyta R. Boler, had not reported the child missing and was found asleep with the front door unlocked. Boler was charged with neglect of care of a dependent person, endangering the welfare of a child and disorderly conduct.
Man arrested after damaging door at Burgard Apartments LEWISTOWN -- Manuel Mateo Jr., 29, of New York, was charged with felony criminal trespass and misdemeanor criminal mischief after Lewistown Police Department officers were dispatched at 6:05 p.m. on July 13 to Burgard Apartments for a trespassing complaint, according to a release issued on Thursday. Police said Mateo remained in a hallway for about five hours after a female resident refused to let him inside. Mateo attempted to force open the door, causing $600 in damage. He refused to leave and was taken into custody.
Package containing wig reported stolen
LEWISTOWN -- According to a release issued on Thursday by the Lewistown Police Department, officers received a report at 9:54 a.m. July 14 that a package containing a wig was stolen from 26 Valley St., Lewistown, the previous day.
Man charged after fleeing officers on Shaw Avenue
LEWISTOWN -- Lewistown Police Department officers saw Frank E. Walker Jr., 36, of Lewistown, acting erratically outside 306 Shaw Ave. at 3:56 p.m. July 14, according to a release issued on Thursday. Police said Walker appeared under the influence of methamphetamine and refused to provide his last name. Walker repeatedly fled into his residence, shouted obscenities and racial slurs and displayed rolling papers while claiming he was smoking marijuana inside. Neighbors reported ongoing issues. Walker was charged with disorderly conduct and evading arrest or detention on foot.
Two juveniles charged after stealing e-bike
LEWISTOWN -- Two juveniles, both age 11, who stole a $600 e-bike are facing charges of theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property, according to a release issued by the Lewistown Police Department on Thursday. Officers spoke with a Chestnut Street resident at 2:49 a.m. on July 15, who reported their e-bike stolen. Officers recognized the bike from earlier contact with two juveniles. Body camera footage confirmed the juveniles had the bike, which was returned.
No charges filed after inmate altercation at correctional facility
LEWISTOWN -- Lewistown Police Department officers investigated a reported assault at the Mifflin County Correctional Facility in Lewistown, which took place at 6:40 p.m. on July 15, according to a release issued on Thursday. Video showed the inmate who reported the assault entered a cell aggressively, and two inmates restrained him. After reviewing the case with the district attorney, police determined no charges would be filed.
