Police detail chain-reaction crash that killed 21-year-old

New report outlines sequence of three-vehicle collision on U.S. 522

McVETYTOWN -- Pennsylvania State Police have released additional details about a three-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a 21-year-old Cambria County man early Monday on U.S. Highway 522 South in Wayne Township.

According to state police, the crash occurred at about 1:45 a.m. July 20 near 2103 U.S. Highway 522 South when a Ford Expedition driven by Robert E. Frey Jr., 56, of McVeytown, entered the highway from a driveway and proceeded south. A southbound Audi A4 driven by Hunter R. Massey, 21, of Hastings, struck the left rear of the Expedition.

Police said the impact caused the Expedition to roll onto its roof and strike a guide rail along the west side of the roadway. Massey’s vehicle then crossed into the northbound lane, where it was struck by a northbound Kenworth tractor-trailer driven by James R. Fetterman, 68, of Commodore. The Expedition came to rest on its roof in the middle of U.S. 522, while the Audi and tractor-trailer came to rest in the northbound lane.

Massey suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Frey and Fetterman sustained possible injuries and were transported by McVeytown Ambulance to Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital.

The Mifflin County Coroner’s Office identified the victim Friday as Hunter Raymond Massey, 21, of Hastings, Cambria County, formerly of Shirleysburg, Huntingdon County.

An autopsy performed July 21 at the Dauphin County Coroner and Forensic Center determined Massey died of multiple traumatic injuries sustained in the crash. His death was ruled accidental.
