Wildflower walk: July 18 at 4 p.m.
Take a walk on the exercise trail to enjoy some Pennsylvania native wildflowers. Meet at the park office.
History walk: July 19 at 9 a.m.
Come out for a guided walk through the historic district and learn about this area's revolutionary ties. Meet at the park office. Walk to the historic cemetery, Blue Ball Tavern, Covered Bridge, Shoaff's Mill and Way Car no. 12. If you require accommodations to reach each area, call the office at (717) 567-9255.
Nature watching by kayak: July 19 at 5 p.m.
An afternoon paddle to explore nature around the lake. Register by visiting the DCNR Calendar of Events. Limited availability. Must be 12 years and older and able to handle an adult kayak. Meet at the small grey kayak shed located next to the main boat launch in the Shoaff's Mill Area, on Boat Launch Road.
Moth backlighting program: July 23 at 8:30 p.m.
Celebrate National Moth Weeks and come out for a program on moths and night-flying insects presented by the Xerces Society. Backlighting is when a sheet is hung up with a light shining from behind to attract moths and other insects. Meet at the entertainment pavilion (stage) in the Shoaff's Mill Area.
Creek critters: July 25 at 4 p.m.
Have you ever wondered who lives in your stream? A huge variety of creatures live among the rocks, from insects and crawdads to salamanders and fish. Get into the stream and learn about the incredible macroinvertebrates that call it home and how scientists use these creatures to determine the health of the stream. Park will provide nets, strainers, and containers to view the creatures. You may bring your own equipment, but please make sure it is thoroughly cleaned and dried to prevent the spread of invasives. All creatures will be released unharmed after the program. Boots are recommended as the water is very cold, but water shoes are acceptable. No need to register. Equipment is available on a first come, first serve basis. Meet at the playground in the Shoaff's Mill area of the park.
Beehive Inspection and honey extraction: July 26 at 3 p.m.
Join at the park office to watch a professional beekeeper inspect hives and extract honey. If you are a new beekeeper and have a bee suit, please bring it to the hive inspection. Limited number for visitors to use. Participants will not be permitted to get too close without a suit, but can still stand nearby and watch. The honey extraction will occur after the hive inspection, around 4 p.m.
Moonlight paddle: July 26 at 8:30 p.m.
Bring your own kayak and gear for a full moon paddle. Kayak under a full moon and experience the night life on the lake. Bug spray is recommended, as are headlights with the option of a red light. A white light is necessary: a headlight or a flashlight. A cell phone does not count as a white light.
Times listed are launch times. Please arrive as early as you need to prepare your boats. Paddleboards and canoes are welcome. Please leave pets at home. This is for adults only. Please have some experience kayaking prior to joining us at night. Night is not the time to learn to kayak.
