LEWISTOWN — A Lewistown man wanted on multiple warrants was taken into custody early Wednesday following an hourslong standoff with police that ended without injuries.
According to the Lewistown Police Department, Curtis T. Williams, 42, was arrested after officers, the U.S. Marshals Service, Pennsylvania State Police Special Response Team, Mifflin County Regional Police Department and other agencies surrounded a residence on Chestnut Street Extended late Tuesday night.
Police said Williams had been wanted since an incident June 1 on South Wayne Street in Lewistown, when he allegedly stole a handgun following a domestic dispute and discharged the firearm. Williams, who police said is prohibited by law from possessing firearms, fled the area and refused to surrender after later speaking with detectives.
During the weeks that followed, police said Williams traveled through Lancaster, Perry and Dauphin counties while frequently returning to Mifflin County. Authorities said he was charged twice by other agencies with fleeing and eluding police.
Police also allege Williams was involved in additional incidents while on the run. On June 7, Mifflin County Regional Police investigated a shooting in Reedsville in which another man allegedly fired at Williams. The following day, police said Williams returned to his former South Wayne Street residence armed with a handgun, assaulted a woman, struck a man attempting to intervene with the pistol and fired a round into a wall before fleeing.
Members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force located Williams Tuesday evening at a residence on Chestnut Street Extended. After Williams refused repeated commands to surrender, police obtained a search warrant, and the Pennsylvania State Police Special Response Team was called to assist.
Authorities said officers maintained visual and verbal contact with Williams throughout the standoff. A drone confirmed he was armed with a handgun. Police said Williams was observed multiple times on the roof of the residence, where he waved the firearm and at times pointed it at his head and placed it in his mouth.
At about 3 a.m., members of the Special Response Team breached the residence. Williams climbed onto the roof through a second-story window, and officers used an armored tactical vehicle to prevent him from reentering the home. Police deployed less-lethal pepper ball rounds before Williams eventually threw the handgun to the ground.
Officers then took Williams into custody. He was transported to a hospital for medical clearance before being lodged in the Mifflin County Correctional Facility on outstanding warrants.
Police said additional charges related to the standoff are pending.
The Lewistown Police Department thanked the U.S. Marshals Service, Pennsylvania State Police, Mifflin County Regional Police Department and other assisting agencies, noting the incident concluded without injuries to the public, officers or Williams.
