LEWISTOWN -- The Mifflin County School District Board of Directors discussed the upcoming nomination and appointment of a director to fill former board President Zeb Harshbarger's seat, among other business at the committee of the whole meeting on Thursday, July 16.
The board recommended accepting Harshbarger's resignation, effective July 23. Harshbarger also served as the TIU 11 Board representative for the district.
Directors will conduct candidate interviews for a potential director to fill the vacant seat with the term ending on Dec. 6, 2027.
They will nominate and appoint a candidate to fill the vacant seat and nominate and appoint a board president to serve until the board's December reorganization meeting.
Directors also recommended approval of a nominee to serve as the district's representative on the Tuscarora Intermediate Unit No. 11 Board of Directors until June 30, 2027, finishing the term held by Harshbarger.

Later during the meeting, directors recommended approval of the following resignations:
• Mifflin County High School Assistant Principal A. Michael Durn effective June 30;
• Mifflin County High School English teacher Mamie E. Magill effective June 30;
• Mifflin County High School English teacher Andrew C. Ciecierski effective June 30;
• Lewistown Elementary School full-time paraprofessional (Autistic Support) Elizabeth A. Pellman effective July 6;
• Strodes Mills Elementary School building substitute teacher Sierra L. Curry effective July 6;
• Mifflin County High School math teacher Jacob L. Schenck effective July 9.
Chief Academic Officer Steven DeArment noted that the list of new hires will include many additions due to recent resignations, in addition to ongoing interviews for unfilled positions in the district.

Directors also recommended approving:
• A contract with Lynne Garvey, CRNP, to review and approve special education evaluations/reevaluations and IEPs at a rate of $15 per evaluation/reevaluation and/or IEP for the School-Based Access Program;
• The job description for the assistant athletic director;
• The sponsor-to-sponsor agreement between Summit Early Learning, Inc. and the district for Oct. 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2027, along with an addendum to include Aug. 31, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2026;
• An increase to the cafeteria substitute rate from $13.25 per hour to $14 per hour beginning the 2026-27 school year.
