MIFFLINTOWN — A Juniata County family is facing an unimaginable challenge after a vacation in Florida turned into a life-altering tragedy when 11-year-old Brodie Dituri was seriously injured in an alligator attack.
The incident occurred on June 27 while the family was vacationing in Seminole County, Fla., and officials said the attack happened at Nelson Fish Camp. Authorities later determined the alligator involved measured approximately eight feet long.
According to family members and supporters, Brodie was enjoying one of his favorite activities — fishing — when the attack occurred. He was rushed to a Florida hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery shortly after arriving. Physicians continue to monitor his condition closely as they work to prevent infection and guide his recovery.
Since the attack, Brodie and his family have faced a difficult and uncertain road ahead. As a result of his injuries, Brodie lost his right hand and now faces the challenge of relearning how to do many of the things he loves most, including fishing, baseball and football.
Additional procedures and rehabilitation are expected as his medical team evaluates the next steps in his care.
For relatives and friends, the days since the attack have been filled with fear, hope and gratitude. Family members say they have been overwhelmed by the support they have received from the community, with prayers, messages of encouragement and acts of kindness pouring in from across the region.
“Many people have reached out asking how they can help,” Peter Dituri said in a social media post. “We are taking one day at a time. We are very grateful for all the prayers and support we have received.
“I am thankful for Brodie’s friends who are keeping his spirits up while he is here,” Dituri added. “And we just ask for continued prayers as this is going to be a very long road ahead.”
While medical care remains the immediate priority, family members hope Brodie will eventually be able to continue his recovery closer to home, with plans expected to include follow-up treatment through the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Recognizing the financial and emotional challenges ahead, community organizations have begun rallying around the family. Harper’s Warriors of Juniata County is helping rally community support for Brodie and his family during his recovery through a card drive and Wear Blue for Brodie Day.
The organization is also encouraging community members to show their support by posting photos wearing blue — Brodie’s favorite color — on Facebook using the hashtag #BrodieStrong, along with a handwritten sign that reads, “Be Brave Like Brodie.” Organizers hope the effort will help lift Brodie’s spirits and remind him that an entire community is standing behind him as he begins his recovery journey.
Helping Hands of Juniata County has stepped forward to coordinate donations on behalf of Brodie and his family. The organization is accepting financial contributions that will be used to help cover expenses related to travel, lodging, meals and other needs that arise while Brodie continues his recovery.
The response from the community has already demonstrated the compassion and generosity for which Juniata County residents are known. Friends, neighbors and local organizations have rallied around the Dituri family, hoping to ease some of the burdens that accompany a lengthy medical recovery.
Supporters say every contribution, regardless of size, can make a meaningful difference. For families dealing with a medical emergency, even modest donations can help offset everyday costs and allow loved ones to focus on what matters most — being present with the injured family member and supporting their recovery.
Community leaders and supporters stress that financial contributions are only one way to help. Many families facing medical crises draw strength from prayers, encouragement and emotional support of those around them, and supporters continue to ask residents to keep Brodie, his family and his medical team in their thoughts and prayers.
As the Dituri family takes recovery one day at a time, they are finding comfort in the outpouring of support from across the community. While the road ahead will bring challenges, family members remain hopeful that Brodie’s determination, coupled with the support of those around him, will help carry him through the difficult months ahead.
