Celebrate with a festive Fourth of July

BUREAU The Lewistown Fireworks Display certainly put onlookers in a festive frame of mind last weekend.

Of course, fireworks — whether of the rockets red glare variety or those from nature — headline the list of things to this holiday weekend. It’s just that time of year.

Here’s a glance at this weekend’s things to do:

Head outdoors to Greenwood Furnace

• Historical walking tour, 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Greenwood Furnace State Park, Huntingdon. Join a park naturalist for a walk through the historical district as you learn about the village that dominated the area for 70 years. Meet at Blacksmith Shop.

• “Nature’s Fireworks,” 8 to 9 p.m. Friday, Greenwood Furnace State Park, Huntingdon. Learn about the firefly, their importance and where to find them. Take a walk through the campground in search of these flying insects. All ages are welcome.

• Red, White and Blue Scavenger Hunt, 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Greenwood Furnace State Park, Huntingdon. Celebrate the holiday searching for colors that represent the American flag. Have fun learning about history and plants during this hunt. Find them all and collect a S’mores kit. For all ages.

• Blacksmith demonstrations, 1 to 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Blacksmith Shop, Greenwood Furnace State Park, Huntingdon. Learn about the art and history of early American blacksmithing with park volunteer Don Maurer.

Paintersville C&MA Third Annual Car Show

The Paintersville C&MA Third Annual Car Show will be held on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, at 3195 Back Maitland Road Lewistown. Help them celebrate the 250th anniversary of America. Registration is from 9 to 11:45 a.m., with a $15 entry fee. Monetary donations go to Mifflin County Dream Center. There will be kids games and activities as well as a food truck available. Special awards handed out for the car show. The first 50 receive dash plaques. First 40 veterans receive thank you awards. Rain date is July 11. For more information, call (717) 513-6070.

Celebrating America’s anniversary

• America250 Community Celebration at Walmart, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Walmart, 10180 Route 522 South, Lewistown. Walmart is hosting a pre-Independence Day event in the store parking lot. There will be a car cruise-in, fire and police departments and tasty eats from food trucks. Admission is free.

• Fourth of July in East Waterford, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, 4345 Horse Valley Road, East Waterford. Celebrate the nation’s birthday in East Waterford, including a Fireworks and Tannerite Show. Plus more fun too including a flea market and helicopter rides. Flea market opens at 10 a.m., and helicopter rides by ITA starting at noon. Also, ice cream by Antietam Dairy, music by Withered Band and food provided by AllyKat and vendors. Fireworks start at 9:30 p.m. Rain date is July 11.

• East Waterford Fourth of July Independence Day Celebration, 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Horse Valley Road, East Waterford. Tuscarora 5K Run/Walk at 9:30 a.m., with registration at 8:30 a.m. Other highlights include car and truck show, cornhole tournament at 10 a.m., kids area-animals, inflatables, face painting and live entertainment from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Area’s largest parade at 3 p.m. Lots of homemade ice cream, chicken barbecue and summertime foods.

• Independence Day in Mount Union, noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Shirley Street, Mount Union. Mount Union Chamber of Commerce invites you to celebrate America’s 250th Independence Day at Shirley Street Park (corner of Shirley and Division streets). Enjoy free hot dogs, chips, drinks and apple pie.

• America250 Celebration at Speed Palace, 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Port Royal Speedway, West Eighth Street, Port Royal. There will be face painting, balloon animals, bounce houses and more free activities. Bella Donna on the free stage from 4 to 6 p.m. Stay for the 36th annual PA Speedweek-Seventh Annual Greg Hodnett Classic, plus fireworks to end the night.
