LEWISTOWN — Describing them as exemplary ambassadors who have brought national recognition and pride to their hometown, the Mifflin County Commissioners on Thursday honored recent graduate Carter Smith and his championship relay teammates for a historic track and field season.

During their regular meeting, commissioners presented proclamations recognizing Smith and teammates Reese Cubbison, Connor Lynch and Wyatt Kauffman for achievements that elevated Mifflin County High School onto the national stage and gave local residents countless reasons to celebrate throughout the 2026 season.

The commissioners said the athletes’ accomplishments represent the very best of Mifflin County, showcasing determination, discipline, humility and teamwork while proving that student-athletes from a rural Pennsylvania community can compete with — and defeat — the nation’s finest competitors. Officials said their success has become a source of pride not only for the school district, but for residents throughout the county.

In the proclamation honoring the relay team, commissioners praised the athletes for demonstrating “extraordinary dedication, perseverance, teamwork and sportsmanship” while representing their school, coaches, teammates, families and the citizens of Mifflin County.

The quartet established itself among the nation’s elite during the 2026 indoor season by winning the Distance Medley Relay national championship at the New Balance Nationals Indoor Championships in Boston.

The team followed that achievement with one of the most prestigious victories in high school track and field during the outdoor season, capturing the Distance Medley Relay Championship at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia while breaking the historic meet record.

Their success continued at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals, where they earned national runner-up honors in the Distance Medley Relay against many of the top high school athletes in the country.

The athletes also dominated the 4×800-meter relay throughout the outdoor campaign, winning championships at the Mid Penn Conference, District 6 and PIAA championship meets.

From Boston to Philadelphia and on to national championship competitions, the Huskies repeatedly carried the Mifflin County name into some of the biggest meets in the country. Each victory brought increased recognition to the program and highlighted the strength of a community that has long embraced its student-athletes.

Commissioners described the season as the most successful relay campaign in Mifflin County High School history, noting that the athletes achieved milestones that will be remembered for generations. Their victories, records and national accolades helped create a season that many local track and field followers consider one of the greatest in school history.

“These young men have become exemplary ambassadors for Mifflin County, proving that through determination, discipline and unity, extraordinary achievements are possible,” the proclamation stated.

Commissioners also recognized the athletes’ families, coaches, teammates and teachers, noting that the accomplishments reflected countless hours of training, unwavering commitment and exceptional leadership while bringing tremendous pride and recognition to both Mifflin County High School and the entire community.

Smith honored for record-setting career

Commissioners also adopted a separate proclamation honoring Smith individually for a high school career that placed him among the most accomplished distance runners in Pennsylvania history.

The proclamation described Smith as “the most accomplished distance runner in the history of Mifflin County,” a distinction earned through years of dedication and performances that placed him among the elite high school runners in the nation.

Commissioners said Smith’s success has inspired countless young athletes throughout the region and provided Mifflin County with a hometown star whose achievements have been followed closely by the entire community.

During the 2026 indoor season, Smith captured his third consecutive Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association Indoor State Championship in the 800 meters, repeated as Kevin Dare Invitational champion and helped lead Mifflin County to the Distance Medley Relay national title.

His indoor accomplishments also included a national runner-up finish in the 800 meters, a fourth-place finish in the national mile and a second-place finish in the prestigious New Balance Indoor Grand Prix Mile in 4:02.71.

Smith’s outdoor season was equally impressive.

He successfully defended his PIAA championship in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:02.63, won Mid Penn Conference and District 6 titles and broke his own school, district meet and venue records.

Commissioners also highlighted Smith’s role in leading the Huskies to Mid Penn, District 6 and PIAA championships in the 4×800-meter relay and anchoring the school’s record-breaking Distance Medley Relay victory at the Penn Relays.

Among his most notable accomplishments, Smith became just the third male athlete in Pennsylvania history to break the four-minute mile barrier, posting a time of 3:59.00 at the HOKA Festival of Miles.

Breaking the four-minute barrier is widely regarded as one of the sport’s most iconic achievements, and Smith’s accomplishment placed him in rare company within Pennsylvania track and field history. For many residents, it was another proud moment in a career that repeatedly brought positive attention to Mifflin County.

He concluded his high school career ranked No. 2 nationally in the mile and No. 8 nationally in the 800 meters while earning national runner-up finishes in both the mile and Distance Medley Relay at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals.

The proclamation praised not only Smith’s athletic accomplishments but also his humility, leadership, determination and commitment to representing Mifflin County with “honor and integrity wherever he competes.”

Smith will continue his academic and athletic career at Oklahoma State University on a track and field scholarship.

“The Commissioners express their sincere gratitude for the example Carter has set through his discipline, dedication and character,” the proclamation stated while congratulating him on one of the most remarkable high school running careers in Pennsylvania history.

Together, the proclamations recognized a group of athletes whose accomplishments elevated Mifflin County High School onto the national stage. Commissioners said the success of Smith, Cubbison, Lynch and Kauffman demonstrated what can be achieved through hard work, commitment and teamwork while providing lasting memories for a community that proudly followed their journey throughout the season.

As Smith prepares to continue his career at Oklahoma State University and his teammates look ahead to future competition, their achievements have already secured a place in local sports history. From national championships and Penn Relays records to state titles and historic performances, the quartet brought statewide and national distinction to Mifflin County and inspired the next generation of Huskies to dream big.
