Local titleholders shine at Miss Pennsylvania Scholarship Pageant

YORK, Pa. — Under the lights of the historic Apollo Theatre on Saturday night, four young women with ties to the Juniata Valley walked onto the Miss Pennsylvania stage carrying the hopes of their communities.

By the end of the evening, they had done far more than represent their titles — they made their mark on one of the state’s most competitive scholarship stages.

The Miss Pennsylvania Scholarship Competition held its finals Saturday following preliminary rounds on Friday, and local contestants delivered one of the strongest collective showings the region has seen in years.

Leading the way was April Gable, this year’s Miss Central Pennsylvania, who finished as first runner-up to new Miss Pennsylvania Stephanie Skinner, Miss Philadelphia. Gable’s placement marks a standout year for the Central Pennsylvania title.

Right behind her was another familiar name: Abby Traxler, Miss Greater Juniata Valley, who earned second runner-up. Traxler’s weekend didn’t end there — she also received the competition’s inaugural Kindness Award, a new honor recognizing character, service and the impact contestants make beyond the stage.

Finley Miller, competing as Miss MidState, rounded out the region’s impressive sweep of the top placements by finishing as third runner-up. With three of the top five finalists coming from local titles, the Juniata Valley’s presence was unmistakable.

The weekend also brought recognition for Samantha Ross, Miss Freedom Forge, who earned the Non-Finalist Interview Award. The honor is given to a contestant who does not advance to finals but demonstrates exceptional communication skills and poise during the interview phase — a core component of the Miss America Opportunity’s scholarship-based mission.

The success extended into the teen division as well. Both local Teen titleholders — Lydia Peters, Miss MidState Teen, and Emily Francher, Miss Central Pennsylvania Teen — advanced to the semifinal round. Their competition held preliminaries Thursday and finals Friday, placing them on a fast-paced schedule that demanded confidence and consistency.

For the local program, the weekend was a celebration of preparation, community support and the strength of the region’s candidates. Each titleholder earned her way to the state stage through months of service, talent development and interview training, and their results reflected that work.

The Miss Pennsylvania Scholarship Pageant is part of the Miss America Opportunity, one of the nation’s largest providers of scholarship assistance to young women. Contestants compete in talent, fitness, evening gown and interview, with an emphasis on leadership, education and community impact.

For Gable, Traxler, Miller, Peters and Francher, the weekend was more than a competition — it was a chance to represent the communities that shaped them. And for the Juniata Valley, it was a moment of pride as local titleholders stood out on one of the state’s biggest stages.

With a new Miss Pennsylvania crowned and a slate of awards heading home to Central Pennsylvania, the region’s titleholders return from York with achievements that will inspire the next generation of local candidates preparing to step into the spotlight.
