Granville Township Police issue advisory for Union Pacific Big Boy visit

GRANVILLE TOWNSHIP — The Granville Township Police Department is advising residents and visitors to plan ahead for increased traffic and large crowds expected on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, as Union Pacific’s historic Big Boy No. 4014 travels through Mifflin County and makes a scheduled whistle-stop near the Roundhouse Road crossing in Granville Township. The locomotive is scheduled to arrive at approximately 12:45 p.m. and depart around 1:15 p.m. as part of its America250 coast-to-coast tour.

The event is expected to attract hundreds of rail enthusiasts, photographers, and families from throughout Central Pennsylvania and neighboring states. Motorists should anticipate traffic congestion on roadways leading to viewing areas and railroad crossings before and after the locomotive’s arrival.

For the safety of all attendees, the Granville Township Police Department reminds the public:

• Remain at least 25 feet from railroad tracks at all times.

• Never trespass on railroad property, bridges, or rights-of-way.

• Obey all posted signs, barriers, and instructions from law enforcement personnel.

• Use only designated public viewing areas and lawful parking locations.

• Do not stop vehicles on roadways, bridges, or railroad crossings.

• Keep children under close supervision.

• Be alert for moving trains and railroad equipment on adjacent tracks.

• Allow extra travel time and expect temporary traffic control measures in the area.

Officers will be deployed throughout the event area to assist with traffic management and public safety. Emergency vehicle access routes must remain clear at all times. Helen Street will be closed during this event. No members of the public will be permitted at the train station due to ongoing construction of the station building and platform. Only customers possessing a valid Amtrak ticket will be permitted in the immediate station area.

Additionally, Roundhouse Road will be closed to through traffic from the railroad crossing near Baldwin Drive to State Route 103 North (Area in red on map). Access will be restricted to local traffic only. Guests are encouraged to access the viewing area via the northern entrance of Roundhouse Road near the MCIDC Plaza.

Parking and view will be permitted along designated portions of Roundhouse Road. Guests are asked not to block the roadway, driveways, or access points and to respect private property and local businesses in the area.

“We welcome visitors coming to Granville Township to experience this unique piece of railroad history,” said Chief Chad Brehman. “We ask everyone to make safety their top priority so that all attendees can enjoy the event and return home safely.”

The public is encouraged to monitor local media, township communications, and official event information for updates regarding traffic patterns, parking, and schedule changes. Train schedules are subject to change based on railroad operations and weather conditions.

Power outage to impact traffic signals in Philipsburg area

CLEARFIELD — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation says a planned power outage by First Energy electric company beginning Saturday night and continuing into Sunday morning will impact traffic signals in Philipsburg Borough, Decatur and Rush townships. This outage is necessary to complete upgrades at the electrical substation located at 1321 E. Pine St. in Philipsburg.

PennDOT anticipates the outage beginning at 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, and continuing until 6 a.m. on Sunday, June 21. During the outage, 11 traffic signals will be inoperative. The municipalities are the owners of the signals and will be controlling traffic by way of either battery back up or installing self-regulating stop signs for the duration of the outage. The outage will also impact street lighting and reduce visibility. PennDOT urges motorists to exercise caution and obey posted speed limits during the outage.

Starting at $3.75/week.
