From hops to fireworks: Things to do this weekend

Whether it’s of the sock kind or the car variety, there will be a lot of hopping going on in the Juniata River Valley this weekend, with a sock hop at the Hope Center in Lewistown and the Car Hop at the Lack-Tuscarora EMS in East Waterford.

Here’s a glance at some of the things to do:

Sock Hop at the Hope Center

The Hope Center, located at 23 N. Juniata St., Lewistown, hosts a Sock Hop on Friday, from 6 to 9 p.m. Come dressed to impress and dance, enjoy snacks and drinks. Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door and kids under 12 years old get in for $5. Purchase tickets at hopeinahurtingworld.org.

Car Hop at Lack-Tuscarora EMS

Lack-Tuscarora EMS, 9320 Route 75, East Waterford, will hold a Car Hop on Friday, from 4 to 7 p.m. Cruise on in and enjoy some delicious bites from the comfort of your vehicle.

Outdoor programs at Greenwood Furnace

Greenwood Furnace State Park in Huntingdon has a pair of outdoor programs on its weekend slate:

•All About Owls,” 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday. Join park staff and PA Game Commission for an introduction to owls. Find out what an owl pellet is and how to dissect one. As evening turns to night, they will try and call-in owls. Meet at Pavilion No. 1.

•”Wild Edible Plants,” 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Join park staff for an introduction to wild edibles, which includes a short walk to identify edible plants. Participants will have the opportunity to taste a few edibles. Meet at the Blacksmith Shop.

Car Show and Community Events

•Sinister RatRodz Fourth Annual Car Show, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, 80 Armstrong Lane, McClure. Special appearances, contests, flamethrowers, live music and much more.

•Fifth Annual Memorial Event in Middleburg, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Middleburg Carnival Grounds, 196 S. Charles St., Middleburg. Car, truck and motorcycle show with trophies. Motorcycle ride after the trophy presentation. All money raised will benefit the Anthony Bowersox Foundation LLC. The foundation is raising funds to build a skatepark in Snyder County. •McVeytown Community Picnic, noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, 3055 Ferguson Valley Road, McVeytown. •Lewistown Alliance Church Community Party, 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, 50 Hudson Ave., Lewistown. Come for the food, bounce houses and stay for a great view of the Lewistown fireworks.

Fireworks to celebrate the Fourth

“Let Freedom Ring” Concert and Fireworks, 6:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday. The Annual “Let Freedom Ring” Concert is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Historical Mifflin County Courthouse, with the Lewistown Fireworks to follow on the Juniata River at 9:30 p.m.
