Father identified in infant death case

Kauffman’s hearing moved to June 26

LEWISTOWN — Forensic DNA testing has identified the biological father of the infant at the center of a homicide case against a McVeytown woman charged in connection with the newborn’s death, according to the Mifflin County Coroner’s Office.

In a news release issued Monday, Coroner Andrea L. Alcalde announced that DNA testing confirmed Anthony L. Norris as the biological father of the infant previously identified as “Baby Girl Kauffman.” The child has now been identified as Betty Lee Norris.

According to the release, Norris was informed by Jordyn Lynn Kauffman in December 2025 that a pregnancy had ended. The coroner’s office said Norris subsequently lost contact with Kauffman and was unaware the pregnancy had continued and that he had fathered a daughter.

After learning of the investigation, Norris voluntarily came forward and provided a DNA sample, which confirmed his paternity and helped establish the infant’s identity, according to the coroner’s office.

The coroner’s office extended its condolences to Norris and the child’s family.

Meanwhile, a preliminary hearing for Kauffman, 20, has been postponed. Court records show the hearing, which had been scheduled for June 19, has been continued to 9 a.m. June 26 before Magisterial District Judge Craig A. Weston.

Kauffman remains incarcerated in the Mifflin County Correctional Facility after bail was denied because of the first-degree murder charge.

Pennsylvania State Police allege the charges stem from the death of a newborn recovered in McVeytown on May 15. Kauffman is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of children, concealment of the death of a child, recklessly endangering another person and abuse of a corpse.

Earlier this month, the coroner’s office sought assistance in identifying and locating the biological father and legal next of kin. Officials requested that any male who had sexual contact with Kauffman between July and September 2025 and believed he could be the child’s father contact the coroner’s office for voluntary DNA testing.
