VA medical center receives $1.9 million for upgrades
ALTOONA — The James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center has received more than $1.9 million in federal funding for infrastructure improvement projects during the second quarter of fiscal year 2026.
According to the medical center, the funding is part of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ nationwide Non-recurring Maintenance program, which provides money for modernization, repairs and facility improvements.
Projects funded at the Altoona-based medical center include a $275,000 replacement of the VA Police Department’s air handling system and a $1.3 million renovation of the Food and Nutrition Service kitchen.
The kitchen project will include replacement of refrigeration and freezer units, construction of a classroom for healthy teaching kitchen classes and the creation of additional exam room space.
“This funding allows our medical center to continue modernizing and improving, so our facility remains safe, efficient and equipped to provide high-quality care for our veterans in central Pennsylvania,” Interim Medical Center Director David DiGiacomo said in a statement.
The VA announced $4.8 billion nationwide for facility modernization and maintenance projects during fiscal year 2026.
