State reminds voters of rights, deadlines ahead of primary
Polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday across Pennsylvania
From staff reports
HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania voters heading to the polls today are being reminded about voting procedures, deadlines and voter rights for the primary election.
Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt encouraged voters to review election information available through vote.pa.gov before casting their ballots.
“As always, the Department of State wants to ensure that voters can make their voices heard and cast their ballots safely and securely,” Schmidt said in a statement. “We want every voter to be informed about how to exercise their right to vote in tomorrow’s primary election.”
Polls across Pennsylvania will remain open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Any voter in line by 8 p.m. will still be permitted to vote.
State officials reminded voters that completed mail ballots must be returned to county election offices by 8 p.m. in order to be counted.
Voters who requested a mail ballot but decide to vote in person may surrender their ballot materials, including the outer envelope, at their polling place and vote normally. Those who no longer have their mail ballot, or never received it, may vote using a provisional ballot.
First-time voters or voters casting ballots for the first time in a new precinct are required to show identification. Acceptable forms include both photo and non-photo identification.
Officials also noted that registered voters who moved within Pennsylvania but did not update their address before the election may vote one final time in their previous precinct if they update their address at the polling place.
Pennsylvania’s primary election system remains closed, meaning only registered Democrats and Republicans may vote for party nominees. However, all voters may cast ballots on any constitutional amendments, ballot questions or special elections appearing in their district.
Unofficial election results from all 67 counties will be posted beginning after polls close at 8 p.m. through Pennsylvania Election Returns.
Additional voter information, including polling place locations and county election office contacts, is available at vote.pa.gov.
