Preliminary hearing rescheduled in newborn death case

Coroner asks potential biological father to contact office

LEWISTOWN — A preliminary hearing scheduled for Wednesday in the case against a McVeytown woman charged in connection with the death of a newborn has been postponed until June, according to court records.

The preliminary hearing for Jordyn Lynn Kauffman, 20, before Magisterial District Judge Kent A. Smith, has been continued to 9 a.m. June 19 before Judge Craig A. Weston.

Kauffman is being held in the Mifflin County Correctional Facility after bail was denied due to the first-degree murder charge.

Pennsylvania State Police alleged the charges stem from the death of a newborn recovered in McVeytown on May 15. Kauffman was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of children, concealment of the death of a child, recklessly endangering another person and abuse of corpse.

In a release issued Friday, Mifflin County Coroner Andre A. Alcalde said authorities are attempting to identify and locate the biological father and legal next of kin for notification purposes. The release stated that any male who had sexual contact with Kauffman between July and September 2025 and believes there is a possibility the child may be theirs is urged to contact the coroner’s office.

The coroner’s office also noted it is requesting voluntary DNA testing in an effort to establish biological paternity and legal next of kin. According to the release, testing will be conducted at no cost to participating individuals.
