Man jailed on rape and robbery charges

Preliminary hearing scheduled June 10

THOMPSONTOWN — A Thompsontown man is facing multiple felony charges after Pennsylvania State Police alleged he assaulted a woman inside her residence and stole her cellphone during an incident late Saturday night.

Larry Roger Allen Carroway, 52, of Thompsontown, was charged May 25 with rape by forcible compulsion, robbery, strangulation, sexual assault, indecent assault, unlawful restraint, theft and recklessly endangering another person, according to court documents filed before Magisterial District Judge Tracy L. Powell.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Pennsylvania State Police at Lewistown responded at about 9:29 p.m. May 24 to a residence on Lower Benner Street in Thompsontown after an ADT Security operator reported a medical alarm activation. The operator allegedly told police a woman activated the alarm after a neighbor entered her home, placed his hands around her neck and took her phone.

Police said the woman told troopers she had been sitting in her living room when someone knocked at the door. She allegedly recognized the man as “Larry,” whom she associated with a neighbor. Court documents state Carroway allegedly entered the residence after she opened the door and began making unwanted advances toward her.

According to the affidavit, the woman told police Carroway allegedly forced her to the floor, restrained her and ignored repeated requests for him to stop. Troopers said the woman alleged Carroway grabbed her by the throat to the point she struggled to breathe and held her wrists behind her back during the encounter.

Police said the woman was eventually able to push Carroway away before retrieving her phone and leaving the residence.

Police later stopped a Ford Ranger on Lower Benner Street matching the description provided by the woman and identified the driver as Carroway. He was taken into custody without incident, according to court records.

Court documents state the woman was transported to Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital for a sexual assault examination and that search warrants were executed for clothing, DNA and fingernail evidence.

Carroway was unable to post $300,000 monetary bail and was listed as confined at Mifflin County Correctional Facility.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 10 before Powell.
