Wild Geese Project adds four new sculptures

From staff reports

LEWISTOWN — Four new geese joined the Wild Geese: Flock Together public art project this weekend, bringing the total number of decorated sculptures across the Juniata River Valley to 56.

The project, led by Community Partnerships RC&D, celebrates the region’s Goose Day tradition through public art installations placed throughout the area.

One new goose was installed at Skills of Central Pennsylvania in Lewistown. The sculpture, which will be named later through an organization-wide vote, was designed by artist Becky Boaz, who also works in the organization’s compliance department. Participants helped shape the design and raise funds for the sponsorship.

“Liberty in Bloom” was installed at Brookmere Winery in Belleville in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. Artist Aimee Parsons-Hubley created the red, white and blue floral design, sponsored by the Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau and the Juniata River Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Another goose, “Trimble,” joined the flock at Rothrock Community Library in McVeytown. Designed by artist Carley Mattern, the sculpture honors Joseph Trimble Rothrock, known as the “Father of Forestry” in Pennsylvania for his role in establishing the state forest system.

The fourth goose, “Nuestras Voces,” was installed at The LEAF — Learning, Entrepreneurship, Arts and Foodways — at 131 W. Market St. in Lewistown. Painted by artist and educator Jim Bright, the design reflects food traditions from Central and South America that are also part of the Juniata Valley’s Blue Juniata Foodways program.

Organizers said the project would not be possible without the support of local sponsors, artists and volunteers, including Affordable Auto Body and Penn State Construction, which helped seal and install the sculptures.

Starting at $2.99/week.
