Massachusetts man arrested in Perry County bank robbery

NEWPORT — A Massachusetts man is in custody after allegedly robbing a bank in Perry County and later being found at a makeshift campsite along the Juniata River, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police at Newport said the robbery occurred Monday afternoon at Pennian Bank.

Police identified the suspect as Christopher Grannis, 38, of Massachusetts.

According to investigators, Grannis entered the bank earlier in the day to use the restroom, then went to a nearby Tractor Supply before returning to the bank.

Troopers said Grannis entered the lobby and demanded money from a teller. When he lifted his shirt, the teller observed a handgun in his waistband.

Court documents state Grannis was given approximately $1,830 in cash before leaving the bank.

State police said surveillance video helped quickly identify Grannis as a suspect. Investigators also determined he may be connected to other bank robberies in Massachusetts and that the vehicle he was driving had been reported stolen.

Troopers further learned that Grannis had removed an ankle monitor two days prior to the robbery.

On Tuesday, troopers located Grannis in the area of a makeshift campsite near the Juniata River in Fermanagh Township, where he was taken into custody. Police said they recovered a pistol, an air rifle and items believed to be connected to the robbery.

Grannis has been charged with felony robbery, terroristic threats and theft. He is being held at the Perry County Prison with bail set at $500,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 29.

Starting at $2.99/week.
