LEWISTOWN -- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that flagging operations will resume Monday for a rehabilitation project on the Mifflin County Veterans Memorial Bridge over the Juniata River along Route 103 in Lewistown Borough and Granville Township.
The work aims to improve ride quality, extend the bridge's service life, and raise its overall condition rating from fair to good. Traffic signals will flash, and flaggers will provide 24-hour traffic control at intersections while contractors replace the final set of bridge bearings, most of which occurs beneath the structure and is not visible to drivers. PennDOT estimates this phase will take about two weeks, though schedules may change due to weather or other unforeseen conditions.
Once the bearings are replaced, normal traffic patterns will resume. Contractors will continue work underneath the bridge to restore the area, which will not affect traffic. Restoration is expected to be completed by late April.
Pedestrians are advised to avoid the overhead work area near the Victory Park Mural. Drivers are reminded to slow down, follow posted speed limits, and use seat belts in all work zones.
The project began in 2025, and unanticipated conditions required more extensive repairs than initially planned. The contract also includes work on four other bridges in the region, including a Route 4001 bridge in Clinton County, with two additional bridges in Juniata County scheduled for later this season. Rylind Construction Company of Muncy, PA, is the contractor on the $5 million project.
