Township discusses surety, other business

LEWISTOWN -- The vice president of the Mifflin County Youth Baseball board announced its application for a $20,000 grant to improve baseball fields at Kish Park during the Derry Township Board of Supervisors meeting Monday.

"These fields are in really bad shape," said Mifflin County Youth Baseball Board Vice President Corey Wray.

Wray stated that the youth baseball board applied for the grant to make the fields more presentable, playable and safe for the kids as well as reconstruct a shed near the fields to add a concession stand.

Wray said the youth baseball board will have updates regarding the grant in 30 days.

Wray explained that the grant money will be used for "revamping the fields, getting them back into playing order by getting them marked out, cut out, new bases and new infield material."

Supervisors agreed that the fields are in need of the work that Wray outlined.

During the new business portion of their meeting, supervisors approved a request for the release of financial security of the multi-sports facilities for the Mifflin County School District.

The release of financial security is for funds the township is holding as surety for the school district's sports facilities constructed last year.

According to multiple online sources, surety is an agreement between one entity promising to perform a job or obligation and another who benefits from the guarantee to fulfill specified tasks.

"Our engineer has reviewed the project, and it is considered complete per the land development plans that were submitted," said Township Manager Kelly Shutes.

This means the township will release the funds set aside for surety now that the project has been fully completed to their specifications.

Supervisors also approved an invoice for M&B Services LLC in the amount of $12,042.65 regarding the Automated Red Light Enforcement Transportation Enhancements Grant.

"The invoice from M&B Services, LLC was for part of the construction contract the township had with them for completion of the updates to the traffic lights along the Electric Avenue/Logan Boulevard corridor," said Shutes.

The grant was awarded to Derry Township and Burnham Borough in the amount of $306,500 in January 2023.

"The project is complete, we are just paying the last of the bills coming in for contractor and engineering costs," added Shutes.

Supervisors approved the annual renewal of camera maintenance at Kish Park for $669.69 with KIT Communications.

The supervisors also approved an acceptance of engagement letter with Boyer & Ritter for the township's 2025 audit.

Supervisors adopted a resolution to add Joseph Ughetto, II as a signer on all municipal accounts held by Kish Bank and remove John Sipe.

The resolution changes the safety deposit box lease held at Kish Bank, adding Joseph Ughetto, II as a signer on the lease and removing John Sipe as he no longer serves as a supervisor for Derry Township.
