Salvation Army kettle campaign continues

LEWISTOWN — For more than a century, the Salvation Army has dedicated countless volunteer hours in the blistering cold to raise money for the community through the annual kettle campaign.

“The bell ringing campaign is our main annual fundraiser,” explained Corps Officer Major Fred Clarke. “This campaign is vital to raising funds for the work of the Salvation Army in Lewistown and supporting our community throughout the year.”

The 2025 campaign started on Nov. 24 and will continue throughout the holiday season at two locations — Hobby Lobby in Burnham and Lewistown Walmart.

According to Clarke, the Salvation Army volunteers work to raise funds at both locations from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m., depending on volunteer availability.

“We are facing some challenges: donations are down compared to last year as people are being cautious with spending, and a shortage of volunteers means kettles aren’t out as long,” explained Clarke.

Despite struggles, the Salvation Army aims to raise $62,000 this year; all funds collected are used to provide heating assistance, rental assistance, and to purchase food for the Salvation Army food pantry throughout the coming year.

As the campaign season kicks off, there can never be too many volunteers, according to Major Clarke. Volunteers typically work in two-hour shifts, and many time slots remain available.

“We are always looking for volunteers to help man the kettles,” explained Clarke. “Anyone interested can call (717) 248-8338 and speak with me, Major Fred Clarke.”

Clarke encourages donors to stop by the Salvation Army at 9 South Dorcas Street in Lewistown and make a donation in the lobby’s kettle.

Food and/or monetary donations are both appreciated and can be collected year-round. Contributions to Salvation Army kettles help enable the organization to continue its mission of serving those in need.
