ROCKHILL FURNACE — Steam billows across the Appalachian hillsides as a narrow-gauge locomotive winds through the Pennsylvania countryside, its whistle echoing across valleys unchanged since the 1870s.

The East Broad Top Railroad, a nine-mile journey through time, stands among America’s most distinctive rail experiences – and now seeks recognition as the nation’s best scenic train ride.

USA Today’s 10 Best program has nominated this National Historic Landmark for its prestigious Best Scenic Train Ride award, placing the railroad in competition with scenic routes across the country. The nomination marks another milestone in the remarkable renaissance of America’s oldest narrow-gauge railroad east of the Rocky Mountains.

“We are incredibly honored to receive this recognition from USA Today 10Best,” says Brad Esposito, General Manager of the East Broad Top Railroad.

The East Broad Top’s story begins in 1871 when these three-foot-wide tracks first connected the isolated hills of central Pennsylvania to the industrial arteries of a growing nation. For 85 years, the railroad hauled coal, iron ore, and passengers through the rolling terrain of Huntingdon County, its narrow-gauge design allowing tight turns through challenging mountain terrain where standard-width tracks proved impractical.

When regular operations ceased in 1956, the East Broad Top preserved something unprecedented: a complete railroad system frozen in time. Track, trains, buildings, and equipment remained intact – a rare snapshot of American industrial heritage. The railroad’s significance earned it National Historic Landmark status in 1964.

However, preservation brought new challenges. After decades as a tourist attraction, operations halted in 2011. The future looked uncertain until February 2020, when a non-profit foundation purchased the railroad. By summer 2021, trains once again carried passengers through the countryside.

“This award reflects the dedication of our staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to preserve the history and unique charm of the EBT. It also reflects the passion and support of thousands of visitors who have made the trip to experience our truly one-of-a-kind railroad,” Esposito explains.

Today’s excursions offer more than scenic views. Visitors experience the identical route and equipment coal miners and farmers used generations ago. The railroad’s current nine-mile round trip passes through landscapes largely unchanged since the 19th century – rolling hills, pastoral farmland, and dense forests create an immersive journey into Pennsylvania’s industrial past.

Special events throughout the year reimagine these historic rides. During Christmas in Coal Country, the rails come alive with holiday magic. The PEANUTS Great Pumpkin Patch Express transforms fall excursions into family adventures. Guided tours reveal the intricate workings of America’s industrial heritage.

The nomination arrives as heritage railroads navigate the challenges of preservation. Operating historic equipment requires specialized knowledge, substantial funding, and dedicated maintenance. Each operational season represents extensive restoration work.

Looking ahead, Esposito shares the railroad’s vision: “We look forward to welcoming even more visitors to enjoy a ride on the East Broad Top, especially as we continue to grow our experience with longer rides, unique special events, and more diverse tour offerings.”

The East Broad Top Railroad continues operations from its historic headquarters in Rockhill Furnace, Pennsylvania. Public voting for USA Today’s 10Best Scenic Train Rides remains open through May 12th, with winners announced shortly after. The railroad’s nomination reflects its historic significance and successful preservation of American railroad heritage.

Visitors can experience this unique piece of railroad history through regular excursions departing from 421 Meadow Street in Rockhill Furnace. The railroad’s preservation serves as a working museum, demonstrating how narrow-gauge railroads shaped American industrial development and connected isolated communities to the wider world.

As steam rises above the Pennsylvania hills and whistles echo through the valleys, the East Broad Top Railroad continues its journey – along nine miles of historic track and into a future where America’s industrial heritage remains alive and in motion.
