MIFFLINTOWN -- Helping Hands of Juniata County is offering a free community day event for individuals with special needs.
Helping Hands of Juniata County is a non-profit organization servicing Juniata County residents by providing aid and support in difficult times.
This event offers those supporting someone with disabilities a chance to interact with other families just like them.
There will be outdoor activities, animal interactions, food, games, balloon twister and face painting.
The event also gives families the opportunity to meet with local agencies and get valuable information.
The event is slated for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 17 at Walker Park.
Some of the agencies attending will be Merakey, Juniata County Children and Youth, Bayada home health care, NuVisions Center, Special Olympics PA Region.
"Our goal is to create a welcoming environment where these families can connect with each other and access vital resources from various agencies and of course have fun," said Nicole Bomberger, Helping Hands of Juniata County secretary
"This is our first event like this, we are hoping if it is a success that it is something we can host annually," adds Bomberger.
After starting the non-profit in January 2024 Helping Hands realized that many in the community are not even aware of the resources available to them.
"A few of us have close family members or friends that have a family member with special needs and we quickly realized how even more difficult it was for them to connect with agencies that could provide services and support for them," said Bomberger
"We were hoping that this would connect relevant agencies with these families as well as present an opportunity for families to meet other families of special needs".
