Lewistown Police investigate alleged accidental gunfire

LEWISTOWN -- According to a press release from the Lewistown Police Department, officers responded to 325 Valley Street at 8:04 p.m. Tuesday, for a victim with a gunshot wound to the chest, upper torso area.
Police stated in the release that a male victim was found sitting on the steps of the residence. The subject reported that he shot himself accidentally somewhere outside the residence and that he tossed the firearm to an unknown location. This man was then transported by FAME EMS and was flown to the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville as the wounds were life threatening. He underwent emergency surgery and was last reported to be in critical condition.
According to the release, detectives were summoned to the scene and subjects were not cooperative with the investigation. Several people were interviewed on Wednesday relating to this investigation. Officers spoke with involved parties who reported that the male victim was having a domestic dispute when the firearm he was holding accidentally discharged inside the residence. A subject at that residence reportedly concealed the firearm and ordered the male victim to get out of the house.
Officers applied for a search warrant of the residence, which was granted by Magisterial District Judge Weston according to the press release from Lewistown Police Department. The officers executed the search warrant at 323/325 Valley Street at 1:53 p.m. They had contact with a resident who was cooperative and assisted officers locating the firearm concealed in the basement of the residence. Officers also located drug paraphernalia inside the residence.
According to the release, the subject who sustained the injuries is statutorily prohibited from possessing firearms. Charges may be forthcoming as the case is still being investigated. Lewistown Police Department thanked the Mifflin County Regional Police Department and Pennsylvania State Police of Lewistown barracks for their assistance with the search warrant.
