New Year’s holiday statistics

HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania State Police released statistics for its crash and enforcement report for the New Year’s holiday travel period on Friday. From Dec. 31, 2024, through Jan. 1, 2025, troopers investigated 425 crashes, resulting in one death and 68 injuries. Impaired driving was a factor in 31 of those crashes. During the three-day period, troopers arrested 254 individuals for driving under the influence and issued the following citations: 2,727 for speeding; 383 for failing to wear a seatbelt; and 50 for not securing children in safety seats.

For Troop G, which includes both the Lewistown and Huntingdon barracks, there were 32 crashes this year, with two injuries and two DUI crashes. Additionally, there were 14 DUI arrests, 529 speeding citations, one child-seat citation, 21 seat-belt citations, 70 seat-belt warnings, 576 other citations and nine self-initiated criminal arrests.

For Troop F, which includes the Selinsgrove barracks, there were 17 crashes this year, with one injury and no DUI crashes. Additionally, there were eight DUI arrests, 125 speeding citations, 14 seat-belt citations, 22 seat-belt warnings, 306 other citations and 23 self-initiated criminal arrests.

Comparing the New Year’s holiday numbers for crashes from 2025 to 2024, there were:

• 425 crashes in 2025, compared to 336 in 2024.

• One fatal crash in 2025, compared to five in 2024.

• One person killed in 2025, compared to five in 2024.

• 68 people were injured in both 2025 and 2024.

• 31 DUI crashes in 2025, compared to 47 in 2024.

• No DUI fatal crashes in 2025, compared to one in 2024.

Comparing the New Year’s holiday numbers for enforcement from 2025 to 2024, there were:

• 254 DUI arrests in 2025, compared to 326 in 2024.

• 2,727 speeding citations in 2025, compared to 3,833 in 2024.

• 50 child-seat citations in 2025, compared to 56 in 2024.

• 383 seat-belt citations in 2025, compared to 344 in 2024.

• 10,098 other citations in 2025, compared to 8,127 in 2024.

Police seeking public’s assistance

with West Water Street hit-and-run

LEWISTOWN — Lewistown Police Department officers are seeking the public’s help after investigating a hit-and-run that occurred in front of 8 W. Water St., Lewistown, around 7 p.m. on Dec. 27, 2024, according to a release issued on Friday. A subject parked their 2024 Toyota RAV-4 along the street and an unknown driver sideswiped the parked vehicle, police said. Man charged with loitering,

prowling at night

LEWISTOWN — Tyler Hess, 30, of Lewistown, was charged with loitering and prowling at night time after Lewistown Police Department officers responded to the 100 block of North Walnut Street at 11:52 p.m. on Dec. 28, Lewistown, for a report of a male screaming and yelling to the rear of a building, according to a press release issued on Friday. Officers said they found Hess standing in the dark behind a building. The report said Hess claimed he was there to visit someone, but the occupants of the building indicated that Hess was not invited to the residence and he did not have permission to be there.

Police and fire departments seeking information for arson investigation

LEWISTOWN — The Lewistown Police and Fire departments responded to 519 E. Walnut St., Lewistown, for an arson investigation at 1 a.m. on Dec. 29, 2024, according to a release issued on Friday. Responding emergency responders located burnt wood in the basement believed to be from a dresser, the report said. It appeared that someone was squatting in the vacant property the report said. Police said the fire caused a pipe to burst, which appeared to help extinguish the flames and prevent further spread of the flames. Woman charged multiple times

after causing disturbance

LEWISTOWN — Bernice Ross, 32, no address listed, was charged with loitering and prowling at night time, trespassing, disorderly conduct, and possession of drug paraphernalia after Lewistown Police Department officers responded to 130 N. Grand St., Lewistown, for a disturbance at 3:34 a.m. on Dec. 29, according to a release issued on Friday. At 2:26 a.m., Ross was advised to leave as she was not permitted to be at this location and she was causing a disturbance. When officers returned to the same location because Ross returned, and was creating a significant disturbance. Ross was taken into custody and she was found to possess marijuana paraphernalia.

Incident with juvenile leads

to simple assault charge

LEWISTOWN — Brandon M. Callis, 35, of Lewistown, was charged with simple assault by Lewistown Police Department officers at 1:56 p.m. on Dec. 29, according to a release issued on Friday. The report said Callis claimed a teenaged juvenile failed to move aside when he was trying to get to another room, he grabbed the chair the juvenile was sitting in and the juvenile slapped Callis. Police said Callis then punched the juvenile causing injuries that included a fractured nose and concussion.

Lewistown man facing charges

of simple assault, resisting arrest

LEWISTOWN — Lewistown Police Department officers responded to a disturbance at 300 Silversand Ave., Lewistown, that was reported to be very confrontational at 4:53 p.m. on Dec. 29, according to a release issued on Friday. Officers found Leroy D. Thompson, 40, of Lewistown, to be highly intoxicated lying on the floor, the report said. Thompson threatened to assault officers when they arrived, police said. Thompson shoved a female and resisted officers’ attempt to arrest him by placing his hands behind his back to secure him in handcuffs, the report said. Officers ordered Thompson to surrender or the officers would deploy a Taser device, the report said, and Thomspon charged at an officer who deployed a Taser. Police said Thompson wrapped his arms around the officer and a second Taser was deployed by another officer on scene. Thompson was secured in handcuffs and he was treated by FAME EMS, police said. Thompson was transported to Mifflin County Correctional Facility pending arraignment on charges of simple assault, resisting arrest, public drunkenness, and harassment, the report said.

Lewistown woman cited for retail theft after stealing from Nittany MintMart

LEWISTOWN — Shannon Price, 40, of Lewistown, was cited by Lewistown Police Department officers for retail theft after she stole items from the Nittany MinitMart located at 403 E. Walnut St., Lewistown at 1:32 p.m. on Dec. 30, according to a release issued on Friday. The theft was captured on surveillance video inside the store, police said.
