County planners move to phase 3 of the Juniata River Trail project
LEWISTOWN — The third phase of the Juniata River Trail is set to begin.
“Commissioners gave the green light to proceed,” Mifflin County Planning Director James Lettiere said Thursday during the Planning Committee’s meeting. The new section will run from the border of Lewistown Borough, Granville Township to the parking lot area of Lowes.
Lettiere also said there will be six new signs installed next week around the phase two portion of the Juniata River Trail, which was completed in the fall.
Lettiere also shared with the commission that they received a safe street and roads for all grant from the US Department of Transportation.
“This grants funding around $358,000 to develop a plan for the safety of pedestrians,” said Lettiere.
An annual reorganization took place during this meeting, where It was approved that the current chair, Kent Spicher as well as the vice chair, Dan Dumire, will continue to serve in the same seats. Michele Bair was approved to hold the title of commission secretary.
Board members questioned during Thursday’s meeting whether those who serve on the planning committee should be paid for their time and expenses. The debate was tabled for the board’s March meeting.
The Planning Commission took action on a subdivision and land development project in Bratton Township for a Ronald E. Crosson.
The plan is to create a second lot on the property for a single family residence to be served by public sewer and private well.
The existing lot has a residence already on that property with no new development plans.
This was the only county ordinance under review but three municipal ordinances were also brought to the attention of commissioners.
One in Menno Township for Jonathan and Janina Kurtz. The plan addresses the sewages and planning for this property to allow a single family residence to be served by on-lot sewage disposal and a private well. It was previously approved for agricultural use only.
Another in Oliver Township for Jonathan and Sylvia Peachey and White Jr. The plan proposes to create two lot additions so that the property lines between the Peacheys and the Whites can be rearranged.
There was no new development or earth disturbance being proposed. The entire Peachey property was surveyed as part of this plan and shown on the property plan.
A third municipal ordinance was in Union Township for John and Salina Kanagy. This plan would create lot two for a residence with an attached accessory dwelling unit known as a duplex to be served by on-lot sewage disposal and private well.
