Free webinar offered about serving on JCSD school board

By Greg Williams 3 min read

MIFFLINTOWN -- The Juniata County School District recognizes the value that diversity brings to its board of directors.

Therefore, the district is trying to increase the number of candidates who run for open seats come election time by offering a free webinar, "What You Need to Know About Being a School Board Director."

"The webinar was put in place during the pandemic and has continued as a way to reach more people," Juniata County School District Superintendent of Schools Christie Holderman said.

The free webinar will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025. Registration is required and can be completed by visiting www.jcsdk12.org.

For a number of years, there have been fewer candidates running for board member seats. In many recent elections, candidates have appeared on the election ballot uncontested. Other recent members have also been elected as write-in candidates.

Holderman said the webinar is perfect for anyone considering a campaign for the Juniata County School Board. For anyone who is undecided, it will help them to understand the responsibilities, challenges and rewards of being a school board director before taking the plunge.

The webinar is designed to provide potential candidates with essential insights into what it takes to serve effectively on the school board.

It will cover the fundamentals of school board service, from the legal and ethical obligations to the strategic role school boards play in shaping the future of education in your community. Whether you're interested in improving educational outcomes, advocating for student needs or ensuring fiscal responsibility, this webinar will equip you with the knowledge and tools to make an informed decision about running for school board.

This session will:

• Explore the key responsibilities and expectations of a school board director.

• Explain the time commitment, legal considerations and collaborative nature of board service.

• Hear from experienced board directors about the real-life challenges and opportunities you may encounter.

Holderman believes this an invaluable opportunity for potential candidates to gain a clear understanding of the role of the board of directors. Whether you're in the early stages of considering a run or ready to file, this webinar will provide potential candidates with the guidance and confidence needed to take the next step.

The district hopes to encourage community members to consider engaging in the important service school boards provide.

Take this opportunity to learn how you can "get on board" and help make decisions that will shape the future of children in Juniata County.
