EAST SALEM -- A Selinsgrove man is facing a felony charge after police said he shot a dog he was watching while its owner was on vacation.
Steven W. Redd, 54, was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Tracy Powell Tuesday on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals, a third-degree felony; possession of a weapon, tampering with evidence and cruelty to animals, misdemeanors.
According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, Pennsylvania State Police at Lewistown were dispatched to 5437 Seven Stars Road, Greenwood Township for a report of a dog that was shot by Redd at about 6:45 p.m. Aug. 19.
Two witnesses stated that Redd volunteered to watch the dogs while the owner and another person were away on vacation.
The report says one of the dogs bit one of the puppies. Redd then separated the dogs and was scratched and bit by the dog that bit the puppy, the report says. Both witnesses reported that Redd texted the owner throughout the day, stating that he was going to kill the dog due to being upset that the dog bit him, with one text showing Redd pointing a knife at the dog.
One witness said the dog was eventually found dead in the woods, across the street. The report says there appeared to be a gunshot wound on both sides of the dog's body.
According to the victim, Redd was seen in surveillance footage, firing a round, then grabbing a garden hose and spraying where the dog was believed to have been shot originally.
Redd is being held in Mifflin County Correctional Facility on $150,000 bail. He is awaiting a preliminary hearing, set for 10 a.m. Oct. 23.
