HUNTINGDON -- The dog days of summer might be upon us, but there's still plenty of time this season for activities at Greenwood Furnace State Park in Huntingdon.
The slate of events in August kicks off with the Perseid Meteor Shower Watch at the park on Tuesday, Aug. 13, as would-be astronomers can check out the meteor shower at its peak. Attendees are encouraged to bring binoculars or a telescope to the extraterrestrial event, if you have them.
Meet at the Blacksmith Shop or Pavilion No. 1 at 9 p.m. at the Huntingdon County park, located at 15795 Greenwood Road.
"Participants should have a good time watching the meteor shower," said Jen Moore, the environmental education specialist at the park. "The program is scheduled during the peak, so we should see some meteors."
Moore added this weekend's scheduled Beach Blast has been canceled, due to the forecasted inclement weather. It's disappointing because Beach Blast is one of the park's biggest events of the year. Last year, attendance numbered around 200.
Yoga and Outdoor Mindfulness for Seniors
Seniors can take a peaceful and powerful journey through yoga and outdoor mindfulness on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Blacksmith Shop and Education Center.
The class elements of yoga, qigong and sound healing in an outdoor setting, including slow-flowing movements, easy to follow postures, Tibetan sound healing, self-applied massage, breath work and a guided meditation. All ability levels are welcome. Attendees are encouraged to bring a yoga mat.
Old-Fashioned Skills Day
Learn about skills from the past through demonstrations and hands-on activities including atlatl, stone sling, primitive bow making, Native American tools and artifacts, flintknapping and blacksmithing from 12 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17.
"The best part of skills day is participating in the hands-on activities and watching the demonstrations," Moore explained.
