LEWISTOWN -- Road maintenance is set to continue across the Juniata River Valley this week.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the following schedule of maintenance activities in Mifflin County the week of June 17:
Bridge Maintenance and Cleaning
• Various sites throughout the county though Friday, June 21. This work takes place off the roadway and has minimal, if any, traffic impact.
Pennsylvania has some of the oldest bridges in the country, with an age of more than 50 years on average. Preventive maintenance is vital in extending the life of the structures. As such, PennDOT maintenance crews perform some bridge deck patching and structural repairs.
Manual Patching
Route 2002 (Freedom Avenue) from Burnham to Loht Road and the Snyder County line in Decatur Township though Friday, June 21. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours;
Route 4001 from Tea Creek Road to Back Mountain Road in Brown Township through Friday, June 21. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours;
Route 4006 (Back Mountain Road) from Greenwood Road in Union Township to Old US 322 in Armagh Township. Monday, June 17, though Friday, June 21. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Most permanent pothole patching is completed in the spring/summer when temperatures stay consistently above freezing. If maintenance crews were not repairing potholes, the road surface would break up further and require more expensive corrective measures.

Base Repair:
Route 1003 (Tennis Park Road) between Route 35 and Mountain Road in Fayette Township Tuesday, June 18. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours;
Route 1004 (Shade Road) from Rockland Road to Route 35 in Fayette Township. Tuesday, June 18, and Thursday, June 20. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Base repair is intended to repair fatigue cracked, potholed or distorted pavement sections and restore the structural integrity of the pavement. All distressed material within the area, including the material beneath the asphalt, is removed and replaced with sound material. The new material is then compacted before being overlayed with new asphalt. Base repair extends the service life of good and fair roads and provides a smooth, safe ride for motorists.

Pipe Replacing and Cleaning
Route 2011 (Troyer Road) between Free Spring Church Road and Freed Road. Monday, June 17. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Route 2009 (Freed Road) between Brown Road and Hart Road in Delaware Township. Tuesday, June 18. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Route 2006 (Cedar Street) between Free Spring Church Road and Freed Road in Walker Township. Thursday, June 20. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Rout 2005 (Center Road) between Miller Hill Road and Kauffman Hill Road in Walker Township. Friday, June 21. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Pipe replacement and cleaning are essential in maintaining water flow around state roadways. Controlling water flow is one of the most important aspects of maintaining pavements. Uncontrolled water flow will damage both the pavement surface and the area under the pavement, which causes deterioration across the length of the pipe.
