MOUNT UNION -- Members of the McVeytown Lions Club are used to seeing the fairways full of foursomes for its Annual McVeytown Open Golf Tournament.
Entering its seventh year, the 2024 McVeytown Open field is only filled with nine teams which concerns Craig Johns, president of the McVeytown Lions Club.
"In the past, we've had 18 teams, but this year we're nowhere near that," Johns said. "I can't really put my finger on it."
This year's McVeytown Open, sponsored by the McVeytown Lions Club, is scheduled for Saturday, July 13, at the American Legion Country Club, 1 Country Club Road, Mount Union.
Johns heard a few teams couldn't make it due to vacation plans or business conflicts. He's hopeful the field fills up over the next few weeks.
The entry fee to play in the McVeytown Open is $85 per person or $74 for members of the American Legion Country Club. Fees include greens fee, cart, tee gift and beverages and luncheon. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
Checks should be made payable to the McVeytown Lions and mailed to McVeytown Lions, P.O. Box 365, McVeytown, PA 17051.
The format for the golf tournament is a four-person scramble. Refreshments will be available. Golfers can purchase mulligans, and every team member will receive a door prize ticket.
There will also be course contests for longest drive to the hole and closest to the pin.
"A lot of our money that we raise goes back into the community," Johns said.
Proceeds benefit the Lions' activities, which include the McVeytown Home Alone Banquet, Leader Dogs for the Blind, co-sponsoring the Justin Henry Sunny Day 5K Run/Walk Scholarship Fund, Beacon Lodge Camp for the Blind, Handicap and Special Needs, Gathering Eye Glasses for Those in Need, Veterans Banquet and co-sponsoring the Rothrock Fair and Country Memories Day.
Hole sponsors for the tournament are still needed for a $100 fee.
