Man jailed for illegal firearm possession

From staff reports

McALISTERVILLE — A 38-year-old man was jailed after police said he shot himself while playing with stolen guns.

Travis Russel Coble, of McAlisterville, was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Tracy Powell Wednesday on felonies including four counts of illegal possession of firearms, two counts of burglary, five counts of theft without taking and misdemeanors including tampering with evidence, making repairs to a weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, the Juniata County 911 Center received a call at about 4:30 a.m. Dec. 30 from a Fayette Township residence, stating that someone had accidentally shot themself.

The report states that police arrived on scene and saw Coble on the couch with a bullet wound in his abdomen, which he said happened when he was playing with a .22.

Police said there was a Ruger Blackhawk 30 carbine revolver on the stovetop, but the cylinder was empty and a spent casing was unable to be located. Also inside the apartment was a pair of brass knuckles, a glass smoking device, scales and a small jar with residue.

The report states that the owner of the apartment complex, Gary Page, was interviewed later that morning and that Page had firearms he kept on the property in the garage.

Upon checking the garage, Page noted that some firearms — a 30-carbine revolver, a .22 revolver and a .308 long rifle — had gone missing. The report states that other firearms could potentially be missing also. The report says Page was also missing collectable coins and stamps that were in a storage room inside the apartment building.

The report states that another individual contacted police later that afternoon because there were three firearms inside the trunk of their car.

On the same day, another individual reported that they found Page’s coins in Coble’s wife’s Dodge Caravan. When police arrived at Coble’s residence, they also found Page’s stamp collection in the vehicle.

The report states that Coble asked his wife to hide the firearms because he knew that he could not legally possess them.

Coble was held in Mifflin County Correctional Facility, unable to post $50,000 monetary bail. He is awaiting a preliminary hearing set for 9:30 a.m. June 12.
