Kid Connection event slated for Saturday

LEWISTOWN -- The annual Kid Connection event will take place on May 11, bringing a day of free activities, games, and entertainment for children ages 2-12. This year's event promises to be a memorable experience for families, with both returning favorites and exciting new additions.

Cassandra "Casey" Goss, the Itinerant Emotional/Autism Support Teacher at Lewistown Elementary School and Chairperson of Kid Connection, shared her enthusiasm for the upcoming event.

"Highlights of this year are the return of Twin Kiss doing milkshakes this year, Lacrosse having a simulation set up to do the scoring, Kid Karaoke from WCHX, Tom's Alien performing from 10-11 a.m., a clothing giveaway for various ages, Serpents and Claws Reptiles and the Agriculture Walk, where there are various

activities set up through DCNR, Penn State, and various other activities," Goss said.

One of the new features this year is the clothing giveaway, which aims to support families in need. The YMCA will also participate for the first time, adding to the diverse range of activities available. "There are many returning participants, but there are also some unique activities this year," Goss said.

Kid Connection has a significant impact on the local community, serving as a bridge between families, children, and support agencies.

"Kid Connection is a connection between families and children to agencies or providers that can support these families. It is also a free event that supports being outside, engaging in activities with no technology, and having fun in a safe environment," Goss explained.

The event holds a special place in the hearts of many Mifflin County residents.

"This is a traditional event. It is something that we are now seeing parents or grown-ups bringing their children and reflecting on when they came to Kid Connection as a child. It offers opportunities to engage in free fun with various agencies and activities while being active with their children," Goss said.

Organizing an event of this scale comes with its fair share of challenges. Goss, who is in her fourth year as the event's organizer, has faced obstacles in the past because of post-pandemic issues, scheduling conflicts, and a lack of planning volunteers. This year is no different.

"The challenges facing Kid Connection right now are the shift in taking over and trying to give a similar experience that others are used to. Many of the vendors/participants agreed to attempt the event in May this year. However, this resulted in some vendors, entertainment, and performers not being available this year. Next year, I will have to ensure I release the date in the late fall/early winter to better prepare," Goss stated.

Despite the challenges, the community has rallied to support Kid Connection. Various companies and organizations, several local churches, and many human service agencies have registered to participate. New companies have also reached out to be part of the event.

"Vendors can still participate, but they will not be featured on the map. They can come and participate and join in the fun," Goss said.

Kid Connection relies on the support of the community to make the event a success. Monetary donations can be mailed to Kid Connection at 109 N Walnut St., Lewistown, PA 17044. Material donations, such as duct tape, paper towels, bottled water, garbage bags, and plastic gloves, are also needed. Volunteers are essential to the smooth running of the event, and anyone interested in lending a hand can contact Goss directly.

As the event draws near, excitement is building in the community. Families are looking forward to a day of fun, laughter, and connection. Kid Connection serves as a reminder of the importance of community, family, and the simple joys of childhood.
