LEWISTOWN -- The Mifflin Juniata Special Olympics committee is gearing up for its first ever Duck Derby, slated for Saturday, from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. at Kish Park, 1 Derry Park Drive, Lewistown.

A single person or teams can choose to sponsor a duck for $5, six for $25, 12 for $50, 25 for $100 or 65 for $250 to race in this event. All proceeds benefit the Mifflin Juniata Special Olympics.

The Mifflin Juniata Special Olympics "added two new sports last year and hope to add three more next year and these donations will cover the cost of uniforms for the athletes as well as other necessities for them," said Stephen Hipple, team leader for the organization.

Hipple said there are still 220 ducks available to sponsor as well as souvenir ducks that can be purchased. The first place winner will receive $300, second place, $200 and third place, $100.

Lunch will be available to purchase from five different food trucks, including Solid Gold, Hostettlers and Corner Kitchen.

"We are looking for volunteers as well as athletes for the Special Olympics," Hipple said. "And anyone who wishes to sign up can do so this Saturday."
