‘Adventures in Babysitting’ still packs a punch today

The 1987 film "Adventures in Babysitting" remains an iconic diamond in the rough for the very '80s adventure/comedy genre.
Director Chris Columbus cast Elisabeth Shue as Chris, the downtrodden babysitter for Sara (Maia Brewton) and Brad (Keith Coogan).
Chris agrees to babysit after her boyfriend Mike Todwell stood her up. So, she takes the option of a dull evening, or so she thought.
Brenda, Chris' friend, calls in a frenzied state and asks to be rescued from a bus station in downtown Chicago.
Meanwhile, the viewer receives a glimpse into potential "foes" Chris and the children will face. People at the bus station steal Brenda's things and give her a hard time for using their "house," which is a telephone booth.
Then, hi jinks ensue for Chris in this whirlwind of a babysitting gig. Chris saves the children and their friend Daryl (Anthony Rapp) from a crazed tow truck operator, high profile car thieves, a gang fight, and oh so much more.
This film is a feast for the eyes with bright '80s fashion including Sara's red, blue and gold Thor costume that unexpectedly saves her life near the end of the story line. The viewer also beholds a dazzling tow truck exterior complete with large LED initials for the tow truck driver.
The characters were just as bold as the scenery and clothing. Chris and the children are so much tougher than they appear when they come out on top for nearly every crazy roadblock they must face.
Chris then hearkens back to the beginning of the film when she was caught singing to the 1963 song "Then He Kissed Me" by the Crystals. She dismantles her stage fright and sings the "Babysitting Blues" at a blues venue in Chicago.
This cute and hilarious story wraps up with one final adventure when Sara was in the fight of her life to remain safe from the car thieves earlier in the film. An unexpected hero comes to Sara and the rest of the gang's aid.
And, of course, the film wouldn't be complete without just a touch of romance for Chris, who after she found that Mike Todwell is a cheater, found a dreamy, caring man on her adventure.
"Adventures in Babysitting" is one of many '80s films that still never cease to amaze and excite.
