LEWISTOWN -- Spring is the season for migratory birds to return north, and three members of the flock have returned to the Juniata Valley.
They join the existing members of the Wild Geese Flock Together public art project, sponsored by Community Partnerships in Lewistown.
"The goal of the project is to recognize our unique local tradition of Goose Day through the talent of local artists while strengthening community spirit and enhancing tourism," said Sam Price, executive director at Community Partnerships.
Penn State Construction had a crew out preparing the landing sites for the geese on Friday. They were also creating a new nest for "Florence Nightingoose," who needed to be relocated to the new Geisinger School of Nursing currently under construction on East Market Street in Lewistown. "Florence Nightingoose" will now welcome future nursing students from her new perch.
The goose had been housed at the School of Nursing's current location in the Highland Park neighborhood near Geisinger Lewistown Hospital. Steve Torok designed and painted this goose, sponsored by the late Kay Hamilton.
"EAGLES' NEST"
The square in McVeytown is now the home of "Eagles' Nest" which is sponsored by Lorraine (Bratton) Bingman, Kimbra (Sunderland) Dillon, Jill (Fisher) Welsh, Jan (Fisher) Johnson and Wilda (Hertzler) Fisher. Jennifer Hartzler painted this goose.
"FITNESS FAITH"
Additionally, the Body and Soul Community Center on Chestnut Ridge Road near Strodes Mills sponsored the "Fitness Faith" goose, which was designed and painted by Torok.
"OL HOOK AND EYE"
As far as the new geese, the Big Valley became home to another goose, "Ol Hook and Eye," sponsored by the Friends of Kish Valley and painted by Daphne Marthouse. This goose is located along East Main Street, or Route 655, near the intersection with Kishacoquillas Street in Belleville.
"This project, which recognizes our region's Goose Day tradition, would not be possible without the generous support of the sponsors, talented local artists and many other individuals," Price added.
