BURNHAM -- If you're looking for a way to get your child active this weekend, the Juniata Valley YMCA is hosting a Healthy Kids Day event today.
Healthy Kids Day is the YMCA's national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids and families. According to the YMCA, YMCAs and their communities have hosted free community events designed to inspire kids and families to keep their minds and bodies active throughout the summer months and beyond for more than 30 years.
"Healthy Kids Day is all about providing kids and family with all the information, resources and help available here in the community," said Sarah King, the program director at the Juniata Valley YMCA, 105 First Ave., Burnham.
"As well as exposing them to all the wonderful programs so many organizations have to offer to get them involved," she added.
Admission to the event is free.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the YMCA will have 16 organizations each with a station with an activity for the kids as well as providing valuable information on what they do to help the community.
"The goal of Healthy Kids Day is to get children and their families out here to kick off summer and healthy living resources and opportunities for them to benefit from," King said.
There will also be a fire truck from the Burnham Fire Co., a police car from the Mifflin County Regional Police Department and an ambulance from FAME Emergency Medical Services. First responders will also be outside, offering a rundown of their vehicles and available to answer questions.
The YMCA will also have four "active programs" going on during the day as well. There will be a Fit Kids Class from 10:15 to 11 a.m., family Zumba from 11:15 a.m. to noon, basketball and soccer drills with Mifflin County High School athletes from 12:15 to 1 p.m. and open swim from noon to 1 p.m.
Plus, there'll be face painting from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
In order for families to participate in the hour-long open swim, they will need to complete a punch card that they will receive at the front desk. Each punch card has eight of the 16 organizations on them.
Families will need to visit those programs and get them checked off. At noon, if they complete that task, they can then go to the pool with their punch card, give it to the lifeguard and enjoy their swim time until 1pm.
Additionally, there will be YMCA tables going on with yard sale items, YMCA summer camp and chicken barbecue at $7 for a half.
